I can understand the necessity to use a WDH on a SUV or a Passenger car, they being designed primarily to carry persons and a couple of suitcases in comfort, i.e. soft suspension. But the Utility vehicle is designed to carry a load on the back. The average ute can have Driver, fuel and still have a one ton l...

Many van owners have difficulty maintaining their weight within the ratings. I have a couple of theories why I struggle with van weight and am wondering if: A. Am I correct? B. Have I miss understood? c. I'm dumb? I have a weigh bridge ticket (attached) from the maker that states its tare weight at n...

Cost and Process to Increase ATM of Caravan
(Preview)
Today I had a full weight assessment done on my Tug and Caravan. Findings revealed I am 154 kgs above the stated Compliance Plate AGM of 2240 kg despite all caravan storage being under utilised. The AGR for the van is 2900 kg. I have been advised it is practical to get the AGM increased to match this value....

Dangers of Air Bags.
(Preview)
Today I spoke with an engineer who was busy straightening, and strengthening,a severely bent chassis on a BT50.Seems the owner,in his wisdom, chose to fit airbags to a leaf-sprung vehicle.Because of where the load is applied to the chassis, this is a no-no,although some will disagree. Whatever. A...

Weighing the combined unit.
(Preview)
I have an opportunity to get our rig weighed (over a weigh bridge), so how should we do it. I want to weigh the ute and van empty, plus fuel, water and gas, the other half thinks we should weigh it with all the basic stuff in it. Not really interested in ball weight at the moment. We were above our combined mas...

What is Tare weight?
(Preview)
Looking at definitions, the tare weight is the weight of an empty container e.g. a shipping container, but what if one fits a refrigeration unit to that container, then surely the tare weight is now the container plus the refrigeration unit. The tare weight of a caravan is said to be the weight of the va...

Here are pics courtesy of SAPOL of a caravan and car roll over in SA. I wonder is the operator of this combination going to be charged with exceeding the towing weight spec of the vehicle. From what I have read the MUX has a towing limit of 3000 kg and even the shortest Silverline has an ATM of 3145. Now I am no...

Weights and Measures by a layman

I started looking for a van and vehicle almost 2 years ago and started out from a position of knowing absolutely nothing about weights, ratings and measurements let alone what an ATM, GCM and other acronyms meant. So I'm a little puzzled. Some people have their tow vehicles tow rating up graded and because its now level do not use a WDH. As has been discussed many times the WDH distributes some TBW load off the rear axle onto the front wheels and the van axles. Am I wrong or does the rating increase primarily done...
