and away he go"s WDH on Genie strapped on the back. To think these sorts may be coming towards me on the highway, horrifying ,
God help us . should I report this ,5 kids lives on the line ? damn hate this ****
You gotta be joking? Surely nobody is so brain-dead that they would set off with their (large) family in this contraption? It's gotta be a set-up,surely? Gundog would freak out trying to use his method of ground-to-mudguard to calculate tension for the WDH.And with a rear axle rating of only 1530kg, this Territory would be overloaded to the point of stupidity.Nah,gotta be a set-up.Cheers
P.S Whilst I am a great believer in "Live and let live",if this is genuine,I would notify authorities ASAP before he kills his family,or kills some poor motorist coming the other way.And I'd do it promptly. This is an accident looking for a place to happen.Spare me.
Just maybe his larger tow vehicle broke down and was only going a short distance.
Just maybe not too,Ralph.Carrying a Waeco fridge, generator and his five kids? Regardless,he's overloaded, unsafe, uninsured and apparently brain-dead.And he possibly will be driving on the same road that you and I use.Get him off the road,Pronto. Cheers

Even the security of that genset looks very dodgy.
Someone could well be wearing that following behind.
I hate to say it but it looks suspiciously like a WA number plate on that Territory.
People like this seriously need to be put off the road, for the safety of their family and others and the bad name that they give caravanners.
Hmm your right no wdh I noticed him with the bars trying to set it up , he must have given up
Maybe the combination is so far down at the hitch that it is too hard to fit WDH tension bars.
How are the five kids seated? Is the Territory configured with seven seats?
That may well be true, but it is very simple to lift the drawbar with the jockey wheel if necessary. However,I'm not sure that the car even has a WDH head on its towbar to fit the bars to? Or perhaps it is one of those old super-lightweight shepherds crook models used on boxtrailers etc? Cheers
Probably another case of "I have towed this van half way around Australia with no problems - so it is safe. Now (expletive deleted) off!"
Murray
Edit: Comment about the five kids: Five kids plus wife and driver equals seven - the Territory can only carry five persons. So he would be gone at a road side check anyway.

My bad assumption. Apparently one model Territory can be had with a third row of seats. If that option is fitted to that particular Territory, then seven people on board is legal.

With 7 passengers on board, the Territory would be running close to its rear axle carrying capacity of a low 1530kg.When we add a Waeco fridge and a lot of luggage,it's game over. And we still haven't applied towball weight.Stupidity in the extreme,as well as being irresponsible.Cheers
Yes agree with that. My friend has a Territory and I have ridden in it a number of times and had never seen the third row of seats, just stuff carried in the back. I rang him and he confirmed that he had the 3rd row fitted, but it was almost always folded down otherwise there was no room for luggage. Hence I never noticed the increased seating.
He tows a 19 feet Jayco pop top (with a WDH), and while I couldn't see over the phone, it sounded like he shuddered when I described the set up described by Orid.
To compound the driver's faults further it looks like he doesn't have a decent mirror on the driver's side door. (The square shape matches the standard door mirror, while the small round convex mirror at the bottom right corner of the mirror also gives it away.)
Finally, I think that Orid did the right thing notifying the authorities. Wonder if it was followed up.
Murray
Edit: Added mention of the WDH.

Has anybody stopped to think that might be his home, 5 kids and wife, all his wordly goods which are important to his daily survival.
Did anybody speak to him to ascertain the full circumstances of his situation?
We look at a photo and make judgements without knowing the facts ......sure maybe he's overweight, but has anybody taken the trouble to find out the real story.
It might well be that being overweight is not his number one priority.....maybe feeding his 5 kids takes precedence.
Instead of contacting the police maybe an offer of assistance might be more appropriate.

Exactly. The OP taking pics from behind blinds and posting it here... lots of gullible vanners with a mob mentality as judge jury and executioners.
How old are the kids? How heavy are they? How big the waeco? How much food in it? Did he have a WDH issue and was going to limp into town for repairs? Has he had an upgrade? Did he have airbags and has a leak?
Surely if it was that dangerous (and APPEARS so, the OP could chat with him? Or ring the police by all means but posting here to demonize seems...not right.

You have got to be joking surely montie.
Because someone has fallen on hard times, do you excuse perhaps driving down the road in an unregistered car with bald tyres and bits hanging off, or perhaps driving whilst under the influence of a substance, illicit or otherwise, or robbing a bank perhaps.
Driving an unroadworthy vehicle, which this so obviously is, is inexcusable under any circumstances. It not only endangers the lives of the occupants, but those of other innocent road users.
Yes, you can feel sorry for people who do find themselves in difficult financial circumstances, but it does not excuse them breaking the law.

Hi Tony. While I have chosen not to comment in Montie's post, other than to say that I am somewhat surprised at his opinion, yours is a different story altogether.Could I draw your attention to the underlined words in the original post,in particular the words "couldn't believe the amount of stuff in the Ford, including large Waeco" and "the amount of stuff this guy is carrying in this 23ft van"? Those words would suggest that Peter had observed the loading of goods into the vehicles, including the generator hanging on the back of the van.Certainly,I have seen many vans with generators hanging off the back," limp into town for repairs".Yeah,right.And how do you consider that airbags would make any difference? Airbags do NOT assist with weight distribution,so a leaking airbag would make no difference to this overloaded death trap. And lastly, your accusing fellow members of being "gullible vanners with a mob mentality (acting?) as judge, jury and executioner" challenges each members right to express an opinion on any matter. Often I will disagree with a member's post, and I will outline my reasons for doing this, but never do I deny anybody the right to their opinion,no matter how misguided they may be."Demonize them?",you say. No,we are simply considering the safety of this family, and other road users, and acting responsibly. Cheers

In that case I'd be interested to know where the large Waeco that was supposedly in the car went ?
Orid, in this case IMO you did the right thing to talk to the police. I see a lot of over weight vans, or perhaps poorly set up but don't do anything. If you talk to them they just get pissed and start an argument. This is very obvious, so you did good.

While it is true that nobody is aware of the facts/reasons why his van was apparently overweight, or why he was towing it with an unsuitable vehicle, there is one indisputable fact, well actually two:
One: It is illegal to be on the open road in that setup; and
Two: While he hasn't had an accident to date, probably more by luck, the odds against that happening would grow shorter the longer he is on the road. That could result in injuries or death to his family, or other road users.
I think it amazing the conclusions, assumptions and judgements that can be made by just looking at a photo.
Does anybody know the ATM of the van, or the measured weight, or the ball weight? Without this information how can anybody possibly conclude that the van is illegal!
I'm not defending anybody who overloads their van but I would like to see some facts before drawing any conclusions.
