Tyre pressure query

I went around the van today and checked tyre pressures ready to go away Wednesday. All sitting on 40 psi. I then had a look at the compliance plate and found 310 kpa/44psi is printed there. 44 psi seems rather high to me, thoughts? Aussie Paul.
