You probably need to ask yourselves. How much use will these things get on our travels & will it justify the initial purchase cost ? Lots of ''stuff'' hanging off the rear of caravans & motor-homes that rarely get used if ever.

Good point ... we have spent 12 months (most of last year) travelling in motorhome and feel we missed lots because we did not have secondary vehicle. Researched towing trailer - too expensive with additional rego and insurance - to flat tow we would have to buy another small vehicle as the one we have is not suitable due to the type of transmission. So that brings us the full circle to where we were 12 months ago - electric bikes. We love the outdoors - we have inflatable kayak as can't take our kayaks on motorhome (too heavy and too difficult to get up and down on the roof and also they will inhibit the solar system!) So, after soul searching, e-bikes are the way to go and we are confident that we will get our money's worth - only remaining issue is to check the overhang and that will be done next week with the safety check for rego. Thanks all the same - your comments and response is very appreciated.

Hi Chaslib. We also have a motorhome and carry our bikes on the back. Really useful especially as we also dont want to tow. My good wife is happy to peddle but I need an electric motor for the hills as the old back wont handle it. Have looked at a bolt on electric motor for about $1200 but money is tight at persent so will have to wait. A friend had one and loved it. Dont know much about the folding ones. The full size bikes fit nicely on the carry rack on the back withan electric motor attached it will be heavier but will remove the battery whe travelling. Good luck.

Hi All,
We had the same thought of getting a couple of folding e-bikes for our travels. Took a test ride of one of the better quality folding bikes and then the full sized bikes. Far better experience with the larger bikes - including multiple gear choice unlike the folding bike. Just needed a different approach to carry the bigger bikes. Have had them for the last few weeks and are being used daily. Saddle bags are a must have and are ideal for the shopping.
We chose the larger 15ah battery which gives more kms. Neither of us has ridden a bike in over thirty years until we got these e-bikes - no regrets. (Much easier on the aging body going up hills!)

I was very interested in your article, as we too have a Delaware, I had been wondering about the ability to tow or fit racks etc, as I thought the overhang might be too long but you have done it. I would be very interested in how and who did this, also info on your bikes, maybe you could PM me with some details, if you have time, that would be great.
Ps how do you like your Auto Trail? We love it.

I have used an electric bike when travelling in my motorhome for the past 3 years. The bike is a folding 20 inch with front & back shockies.
The brand is easy commuter and i can recomend them for quality and after sales service. So far over 2000 kilometers on bike.

Hi,
my wife and I have been using our elec bikes for 3 years. We love them and would not be without them. Most larger towns have plenty of paths and bike trails.
If you look on Gumtree, under bicycles in sport and fitness you will find many elec bikes. Much cheaper second hand and usually looked after. Preferably purchase an aluminium one (unisex)
But make sure the battery is lithium and it charges up 100%. A new lithium battery now days will last about 3-4000 charges.
You can look at ...E _ BIKES Noosa or Tewantin and he operates from home (David Kemp) nice fellow and has very competitive prices and will send a bike anywhere for about $100
On our travels we are so surprised at the lack of electric bikes. Many people come up to us outside Aldi, Coles supermarkets etc and are amazed by them. Buy some you will love em !!

Bought 2 EzyCommuter bikes ... So easy to ride ... Looking forward to having them on our travels this year. They fit neatly around the bed while travelling and will investigate if weight suitable for bike rack which we have on motorhome. Thanks for your help.

I have an older brother with a Winnebago on a Ford chassis

He went for a free test ride, and he ended up purchasing a second hand folding electric bicycle, from the below mob in Fremantle

I think that it is the Uni-Ryder model. I do know that it has a 36 volt, 10 amp, Lithium battery, but not sure how many gears it has

I have had a ride of it (173 cm tall) and it is not too small for me. The only hiccup I had was when I went to do a U Turn, I automatically moved the pedal forward so as not to scrape the ground, and this started to make the electric motor run again.

It was a very easy fix, the next time I did a U Turn, I just pedalled back instead of forward.

He stores it on his, over the cab bed, as he does not have a bike rack

When he is not travelling he rides it every day, at home. He appears to be very happy with it.

As I already have a bike rack, I shall purchase a full size electric bike, but I did find nothing wrong with the smaller folding electric bike.
