WA weather: Catastrophic fire conditions forecast for parts of the state

Hot, dry conditions and strong winds have combined to produce catastrophic fire conditions across southern Western Australia and the Gascoyne region for Wednesday and Thursday.

The potentially catastrophic conditions extend across the Great Southern, Goldfields Midlands and Midwest Gascoyne.

A trough of low pressure is forecast to create northerly winds of more than 70 kilometres per hour and temperatures of over 40 degrees Celsius in some areas, such as the Wheatbelt town of Kellerberrin.

Extra fire crews have been put on standby, and two extra fixed wing water bombers have been sent to Albany and Jurien Bay.

The Erickson fire fighting helicopter, which can hold 9,500 litres of water, was brought back to Perth at the weekend.

Fire authorities are urging people to be prepared and not take any risks.

Wind change helping: DFES

DFES spokesman Alan Gale said a favourable wind change at day break was now helping firefighters.

"A lot of the smoke has dissipated already," he said.

"So those winds have gone from that south-westerly and swung back more around to an easterly at the moment, which is pushing it back on itself, which is good news.

"The threat is not over yet because with these sorts of winds it will start moving out to a new front on the opposite side of the fire, but the risk certainly has been reduced."

He said forecast hot weather was of concern, with Perth expecting 35 degrees today.

A resident on Coondaree Parade said he had been up all night battling the fires and had packed the family's dogs in the back of his truck, ready to flee if necessary.

Five dogs in the back of a truck in a garage.

It was not known how the fire started.

Hope they get it out soon KJ - still early in the summer - so many fires, especially over the West - have friends who have just moved to the hill out of Perth, - hope they don't get fire up there. Take care all.

Yes, we seem to be getting more than our share of fires here in the West, jules,

There are many hills out of Perth, would your friends be living in Kalamunda  by any chance jules ?

UPDATE  10.15 AM   9TH FEB.........

A fire which threatened homes in Perth's south-east overnight has eased as forecast rains begin to pass over the city.

the forecast for Perth is for falls of between 5 and 20 millimetres of rain by midday (WST).

Firefighters said the blaze, fanned by wind gusts up to 70 kilometres per hour, came to within 200 metres of some properties, but at this stage the only damage had been to fences in the semi-rural area.

Department of Fire and Emergency Services spokesman Brad Miles said the blaze no longer posed an immediate threat, but residents in Bedfordale and Wungong needed to remain vigilant.

He warned residents would have little time to react if the fire did cross containment lines.
