Firstly thankyou for accepting hubby and I to this site.
Question: We want to travel to hot Springs Moree. Our concern is getting up the Gibraltar Mountains. We have a 20 foot caravan around 2.5 being pulled by a Nissan Navara.
OOur question would it be better to drive to tenterfield and head to moree or go via gwydir highway via Glen innes.
Welcome to the Forum Suzanne. I believe you are referring to Gulmarrd, a locality in Maclean NSW.
The Nissan Navara should be suitable for towing 2.5tonne caravan (as long as the Navara isn't loaded up).
Make sure you stop at Pallamallawa (east of Moree) and overnight at the Pally Pub, the meals are gourmet and reasonably priced. The Pub is community owned and a real oasis in the dust with it's own caravan park - there is a free camp down at the river with toilets, picnic area and potable water.

Hi The Wynbergs. Welcome to the forum. Just a suggestion, but perhaps you might ask this question in either I Digress or Road Conditions as I think more forum members will notice your enquiry.
I presume you are coming from Gulmarrad near Maclean heading towards the Moree area. I have driven both routes recently and both are okay but the Gwydir would be my first choice between the two. The Bruxner Highway to Tenterfield is alright until just before Drake when the climb up the Richmond Ranges is pretty steep, especially when towing a van. I have a Dmax towing a Windsor that weighs about 2.3 tonne loaded up and I could certainly feel it. I was right down the gears and it was a hard pull up the ranges. Closer to Tenterfield it is a bit windy but alright. It is just that section of about 5 kilometres that is hard going.
The Gwydir is much better. A better road and the climbs although a little bit longer are not as steep. There are plenty of areas where you can either pull into the left lane or pull off the road for a break. Once on top of the ranges it is an easy descent and not a lot of traffic.
If you head to Glen Innis and then towards Moree there is a good council park at Warialda plus a national park and a roadside stop. There is also a free camp right near the town.
Either way you have to climb the mountain but my suggestion would be via the Gwydir. More places to stop and see along the way as well.
