No, only works when in reverse. Whaaaat? Turns out theres two sorts of camera , Mmmm a backup camera and a rear view camera. Who knew, certainly not this new kid on the block.
So, any tips from the experts on what is the best REAR VIEW camera to get? Also do I need an auto sparky to make the change over?

Welcome to G/N's Doug and Pam, I can't specifically answer your query - I had a reversing camera attached to Hilux years ago - great for reversing and hooking up to tow-ball. I was of the opinion that it was illegal to monitor (by camera) traffic behind your vehicle whilst travelling, approved rear view mirrors must be used.

A reversing camera gives a more distorted view compared rearview camera. They often handle low light differently and have different fields of vision too. Side by side the difference (between good ones) is easily seen. All the rearview cameras I've seen are far more expensive than the "equivalent" reversing camera. Most people using a camera for looking behind them are actually using a reversing camera with a seperate trigger.

I love my rear view camera on the aluminium teepee and Collie for that matter. I have a Safety Dave 'rear view' not reverse, camera on the teepee and has great view right up until the vehicle behind is going past then my clear view mirrors take over. The Collie has a Genuine Holden reverse camera also with a great wide view for reversing out of parking spots in busy streets etc. I also love it for hooking the teepee up. I wouldn't leave home without either of them.

Edit.....I have a rear view mirror monitor as that is where I would look normally for anything behind, it also keeps clutter off or around dash etc.
As Chris has said below my rear view on teepee also has sound but is turned off as I found it annoying. Could be handy for someone guiding you into a spot
though. although just a push of a button to turn on or off.

I have a Precision Vision I bought second hand(unused)about 12 mths ago. My Van had a rearview camera fitted and wired to the tow bar, with plug, nothing else.
The Precision Monitor is 5" so a good size to quickly view when driving.
I had an autoelectrician wire the car end. The car had a small "tow ball" camera and small screen (which I removed).
So the set-up now allows me to slightly adjust the car rear camera when not towing and use as a rear view. Also allows me to line up when coupling the van very easily (no arguments)
When towing I have both views selectable with the buttons on the monitor. Normal towing I view the traffic behind the van (very useful when reversing the van also), and occasionally change channel to check the towball, chains etc.
So I have to select rearview when about to reverse, i had it wired that way so I can select it when driving .(dont have to go into reverse gear).
The Monitor also has capacity for a third camera input.
The Precision is not cheap, I havent had any issues so far.
