While the prevailing wisdom seems to be that COVID-19 will be an ongoing disease with new variants, I can't see why it couldn't eventually disappear like polio or smallpox, provided that our containment efforts are not sabotaged by antivaxxers. We managed to stave off a looming swine flu pandemic in 2009, and a previous SARS scare in 2002-2004, so why not COVID-19?

Yes, we were working in China during SARS and were locked down for months - And then SARS just petered out never to be seen again, so guess there is some chance of Covid-19 going the same way

What I don't understand about the so called lockdown in Sydney is that people still go out for the whole day and call it exercise, Harvey Norman and other retail outlets are essential shopping and people can still come to your home. I noticed too that our premier now ends each sentence with an inflection on the last word. Strange times, glad I am up on the north coast in an isolated spot.

The eventual answer to the lockdowns is the vaccines. Without doubt, they limit the transmission of the virus, protect people from either getting it or at very least, limit the degree that the virus affects the recipient. I believe that once the vast majority of Australians are vaccinated, we can see a return to somewhat more normal life, although until the rest of the world bring it under control, overseas travel may still be an issue. With regards the antivaxers, there is now definite evidence that the vaccines are effective. If you look at the numbers in the USA, the states that have been most successful at getting their population vaccinated, the virus infection numbers have been plummeting. Those states that for one reason or another are falling behind with their vaccinations, still have very high infection rates. Just like other epidemics that we have faced, such as polio, the vaccines do work. Polio has practically been eliminated in this country due to the vaccine. Whilst Covid will still be around, just like polio, we can virtually eliminate this disease if everyone is smart and gets the vaccine. At that point, then we can live with it. Until then, lockdowns are the way to go.

How did "we" manage to do this? My experience is not with mass vaccinations.

Obviously the circumstances were different. COVID-19 is a much more virulent beast requiring a mass vaccination approach, or don't you watch the news? The current spread of COVID-19 is being driven by antivaxxers and vaccine hesitancy. The antivaxxers should stop whining, roll up their sleeves and do their part for their fellow Australians.

These people should be asked to sign a declaration that they cannot use their public health systems if they do get sick.

They asked this question in Germany & these idiots said they still wanted access to hospitals!

I went to the supermarket yesterday to get veggies as our fridge was empty.

The covid sign at the entrance said this store can only have so many hundred people in the premises.

I did not go in as even with a fraction of the allowable covid number restrictions, I would not risk being in that over populated environment. It is simply out of hand.

Even in the busiest of non Covid times I have never seen that many people in this supermarket.

I am a person who is for vaccines. Let's get that out of the way!

But the 11 point massage is no different from what our politicians use.

One can more than easily twist an argument to the opposite position to achieve a particular view.

One could argue that putting petrol is a vehicle is bad for our health.

One can also argue that a vehicle without petrol so we can't get to a hospital is bad for our health!

The claim that it "will not prevent you from death (sic)" is false by omission. The vaccine will prevent death in the vast majority of cases. You stand a much better chance of surviving an infection if your body has prepared you for it. That's not rocket science.

Israel has no lockdowns or masks or restrictions on gatherings, and its death rate is virtually zero.

Vaccines were never meant to provide lasting immunity. They only last until the next variant. All the medical professionals recognise that booster shots will be necessary. The UK has already moved in that direction.

The antivaxxer is virtually saying that, since vaccines cannot 100% guarantee that COVID will be eradicated or controlled, then what good are they? For him it's either 100% or nothing. He would probably be holding the exact same sign if the efficacy were 99.99%.

It's too bad that this virus doesn't kill young people. Then we would get rid of the antivaxxers before they got the chance to reproduce.

If you have to ask then obviously you need educating about the vaccine....go and google for some facts...not jumping on a camping forum and asking the forums "gurus"..unbelievable.

OK, I'll bite on that stupid anti vaxxer sign.

The last 5 statements: ALL are WRONG. This virus isn't going away. We are stuck with it for life. So when enough people are vaccinated we should be returning to a normal life, with no travel restrictions, business closures, lockdowns, restrictions on gatherings, masks. ALL WRONG.

The first 6 statements are intentionally misleading. As noted by dorian, there can never be 100% guarantee against anything happening. But in EVERY ONE of those statements, there will be significant improvement.

Fortunately, the vast majority of the population is smart enough to realise that what these extremists are preaching is just wrong.

Perhaps the cause of that undignified comment was an unforeseen reaction to being vaccinated Magnarc. A few others in the tub thumping club seem to be building up a head of steam when confronted as well.

It is not often that I concur with your representations, but I believe that you've hit the nail on the head here! For too long the noisy minority have managed to negatively influence those who seem not to be able to think for themselves. Cheers

Yesterday at 8PM some hoon was revving his bike down our street. At 1AM this morning another scumbag was out and about. This happens just about every day. These lowlives don't care about any lockdown and the local cops are too lazy to enforce it.

My father was due to come out of hospital yesterday. He has lost 99% of his mobility and requires assistance with toileting and showering. I can no longer help him, so I have been looking for an aged care facility. He is immunocompromised, so he hasn't been able to take his planned COVID shot. I had to lodge a complaint against my parents' current Home Care provider for failure to provide services, so I'm looking around for another provider as well. The current provider has only two fully vaccinated care workers. Other providers refuse to answer questions on the subject. One doesn't even know that they are now required by law to vaccinate their staff. Several aged care residents in Sydney have been put in hospital by an unvaccinated worker, and it transpires that only one third of the nursing home's staff were vaccinated, despite being eligible. So where do I send my father? Is any facility in this country worthy of our trust?

Antivaxxers don't deserve to be breathing our air. They are a danger to our society. These stupid, selfish, spineless people are sabotaging our efforts to make our society safe. Damn them all to hell.

Dorian, that is an inference that I find tasteless to say the least - Can you provide figures on Duty Rosters in your LCA (Local Command Area) to confirm there was a surplus of Police, or any other proof to your statement. - experience would tend to make me believe that you are talking out your a**e.

Any chance of getting your Dad back in hospital. Hospitals have priority over vacant spaces in nursing homes. We found out this after our father was in hospital for months & to get him out as the hospital wanted the space, we could jump the queue, not only jump, but put at the front & got into a good nursing home & didn't even have to fork out a bond even though we could have afforded it.

I told you privately of my experience with the local cops. I despise them passionately for their callous disregard for the plight of myself and my elderly parents. They are largely responsible for the bitter, angry old man that I have become.

Some years ago, when I was almost 60 years old, I chased and apprehended a 20-year-old intruder. It turned out that he had run from the police who were too lazy to give chase. They would have been in their 30s. I was running after the intruder in my slippers, and I'm no athlete.

By the way, my father and mother are both concentration camp survivors. My mother lost a 5-year-old brother in the camp (to a grenade), and her sister was crippled for life. Despite this, my father hates the local cops more than he ever hated the Gestapo, and he's not a spiteful man. He has several German friends, and he even sent me to learn German at Saturday school. I hope that puts you in the picture.

Mmm, I didn't know this was a English exam and you are the headmaster. For you information the spelling of 'tow' was deliberate as I mentioned WDH and had a little play with words.

I guess I failed your exam. No biggy as my days of schooling etc are now in a previous life.

Those WDH are dangerous things to mention around here Doug. They "generate" a lot of problems.
