Welcome to the gang Andrew and Cheryl, enjoy here and out in the playground.

The only thing I will suggest, if you haven't already, grab a copy of 'Wikicamps' and put on your phone or poota. Great very small expense with heaps of places to camp etc and info. Also and as well even,

Keep Safe on the roads and out there.

Have you booked Big Red Bash yet Andy ?2020 tickets are sold out. There's a possibility ticket cancellation may put a few back on the market. Camping is also at a premium during the event whether at the local Caravan Park, various town camps or designated BRB campsite. There are good resources on road conditions in the area. Probably the Birdsville Hotel website is the best starting point as they have links to relevant state and local council road condition websites. As mentioned Wikicamps is invaluable too.

Finke and Birdsville are on opposite sides of the Simpson Desert.
DO NOT contemplate towing your van across the Simpson.
There are 2 options, via Marree in SA or via Boulia in Queensland.
Cheers,
Peter
