Disgusted

A fortnight ago today, 29th Sept we were travelling to Melbourne to board the ferry to Tassie.

Pulled up to top up with fuel as towing into a fairly strong headwind and pulled into the Euroa, Victoria  fuel stop southbound and were having a cuppa and leg stretch when 3 large vans in succession pulled up a couple of parking bays away from us and what did they do,  yep the most disgusting thing anyone can do. Casually got out of vehicle, walked to back of each van and opened the valves on their grey water tanks and let it all go.

The smell was disgusting and of course they didn't care, they were all inside the servo having something to eat and a cuppa.  All casually wandered back, closed the valves and drove off.

I'm not saying they were grey nomads and I'm not saying they weren't but we did notice that every one of them looked reasonably elderly and all had a good mop of grey hair.

All the talk in other topics about grey water and how to manage it, well this isn't good management. Next time if I see it happen I will make sure I get some rego numbers etc. Might help authorities and on the other hand it mightn't.

These actions make it hard for everyone else who do the right thing, as usual it's the minority who do this sort of stuff.

Really, really lazy grubs. There is actually a dump point at that big Euroa servo.

They must have been the group that we saw sitting around a campfire bragging about how many dunny rolls they'd knocked off from caravan parks.

They were also bragging about how much hand soap they'd pumped into their containers.

Toyota Landcruisers, Nissan Patrols & 23ft caravans.

Makes the rest of us look pretty ordinary.

That servo is under a decade old.
On the other side of that freeway is a dam not 50 metres away, where wild duck, herons and yabbies occupy.
Garranteed that soapy, smelly grey water will seep there.
I would confront them or leave a sign myself. Or online epa same as litterers, all you need is rego, time of alleged offence and be prepared to front court if needed.

OK. I'll play devil's advocate.

Why is what they did so bad?

I assume the area you reference is a bitumen sealed area with designed in drainage. I also assume that the water run-off from such an area will be assumed to contain the normal waste products from such an area habited by large volumes of passing motor vehicles; oil, coolant, urine and the like. Additionally, and I'm no chemist, I assume grey water will be mainly water contaminated with soap and bits of food waste.

Is such disposal *really* as bad as the OP suggests?

So...if every passing rv dumped their grey stuff there, what of that wildlife I described 50 metres away? Do they not matter...?

Damn humans...

Gday...

OK - I too find the actions of those described in the OP as, if not disgusting, at least anti-social, thoughtless and inconsiderate.

However, Mike's comments are a little 'less emotional' and, as he stated, 'playing devil's advocate'.

May I indulge a little as well perhaps.

This is a satellite view of the roadstop referred to -

Euroa 03.jpg

So, let's look at this pragmatically.

This highway roadhouse will be a fully sealed area, if not bitumen, then reinforced concrete to withstand the movement, and parking, of many very heavy vehicles.

This highway roadhouse will not only have an extensive drainage system installed underground, discharging to approved drainage pipes, but will have the facility to capture and direct liquid, spills or otherwise to its surface, to the drainage grates/holes provided throughout the hard-seal. Indeed, this drainage system will cope daily with far worse things than 'grey water'.

I note the existence of two 'dams' nearby the highway roadhouse - Dam A and Dam B.

Dam A is a considerable distance from the highway roadhouse and any discharge from the hard-seal at the highway roadhouse would be to a system that discharged underground, below a series of motorways, some many metres from the where the 'spill' occurred. It is highly unlikely that the discharge would be to ground surface near or into Dam A.

Dam B is perhaps within the 50metres mentioned. However, again it would be unlikely the discharge from liquids etc entering the drainage system would pass below the hard-seal of the highway roadhouse, below the nearby roadway, and then be discharged into the paddock to impact on the water/environment of Dam B.

Despite all those pragmatic observations, I too find the actions of the OP unsavoury and not in keeping with usual human hygiene standards - definitely for 'informed' travellers.

I too would take registration details and photograph the vehicles/vans and report it to the EPA - not because I was 'disgusted' so much but because it is just like throwing empty softdrink/water bottles, Macca/KFC wrappings and other litter from a vehicle making a mess of our highways - or leaving disposable nappies in rubbish bins at rest areas.

As Mike says, "People can do far more disgusting things than that" ... and they certainly do, not just on our highways. I would much rather get myself all activated to protest what the general mining community do to our bush and its environment, the pollution we each generate with our vehicles towing our oversized vans all over this country, the plastic that is causing catastrophe to our ocean wildlife. I could go on.

cheers - just make sure each of us minimises how 'disgusting' we are in ANY way to our environment - John

Letting your grey water run direct onto the ground, is in my opinion, the wrong thing to do, (unless you are watering the grass), especially when you are leaving, or not even staying at that place

The few non-responsible people, are making it look bad for the rest of us

I doubt if the same people, would be dropping their grey water, on their own driveway

Unfortunately we are all tarred with the same brush

A few years ago, I saw a police car pull over a caravan, who was leaking (I assume) grey water, as he pulled out of a free camp called, Cliff Head North, the old one close to the road

I assume that there would be a law against discharging grey water, on a highway, or in a servo parking area

So you were there and witnessed the act Keith.

No it wasnt me or anyone I know

I think not, so why indicate that this act was committed by a certain group of people and furthermore those in that group are not short of a quid.

You are a disgusting example of a human and a very poor representative of grey nomads in general.

Good morning Desert Dweller,

I am disgusted and annoyed by your comments as well.

I have enjoyed you pictures that you have provided but obviously the man behind the camera is a very different person to what I may have assumed you would be.

Your self opiniated views are vile and I for one will be reluctant to participate when these comments are tolerated here.

Gday...

Dick, often DD's comments get me startled, surprised, annoyed and even angry - and dammit, sometimes I have smiled at them.

However, I think DD has a misplaced sense of what is 'witty'. His 'wit' borders on sarcasm. I will give him the benefit of the doubt this time and assume he was trying to use his sarcasm as wit in describing his opinion of the offenders.

However, in this instance I think he didn't fully describe the possible offenders well enough ... rather than Toyota Landcruisers, Nissan Patrols and 23ft caravans, he should have described the possible offenders as Toyota Landcruisers, Nissan Patrols, various ute varieties and 23ft caravans.

Cheers - John

Good morning rockylizard.

By your rude and unnecessary additions to his post you are only making the situation worse.
As another member above has indicated, when this type of comment appears on a forum it is usually indicating that the comment is troll like to cause argument and discontent and for you to support it even in jest. just lowers yourself to his level.

I thought this forum was made up of reasonable people, well maybe I had gotten the wrong impression.

Gday...

Please read all my post - rather than being selective on which parts you wish to select.

I said - "DD's comments get me startled, surprised, annoyed and even angry - and dammit, sometimes I have smiled at them.
However, I think DD has a misplaced sense of what is 'witty'. His 'wit' borders on sarcasm. I will give him the benefit of the doubt this time and assume he was trying to use his sarcasm as wit in describing his opinion of the offenders."

I should have added that many of DDs comments/opinions, I feel, are made primarily to be 'troll-like' - he always WANTS to draw the anger of readers ... I think he gains his daily jollies from them. However, it does not excuse them, neither does it usually add to the post.

That said, I did feel that my comments were not "rude and unnecessary additions" rather that I was trying to point out that it doesn't matter what vehicle or van or motorhome or campertrailer or bicycle a traveller utilises, far too many are 'grubs' hence my expansion of the 'misplaced' identification of alleged offenders ..... even some on this forum unfortunately I would assume.

And you don't need to worry, this forum IS made up of reasonable people. Just sometimes posts wander and twist and self-destruct. Just like life I guess.

cheers - John

Hi rockylizard

I read your post and I fail to see the humour in adding to the denegrated group, another set of owners of various ute varieties as originally stated by Desert Dweller.

Unfortunately by yours and my participation and by the distaste displayed by Dickodownunder, Desert Dweller has achieved what forum trolls want and that is argument and division.

I am reluctant to participate amongst others when rudeness and lack of respect is rife.
This has not been a good start to my Sunday.

Gday...

Sorry that your axles are all bent up Angie, it certainly is not, and was not, my intention to have any influence at all on your Sunday or any other week day.

I guess the problem may emanate from the difficulty in correctly interpreting the written word - which can result in it being viewed as 'rude and lacking in respect'.

Unfortunately, the 'trolls' live amongst us whether we have differences of opinion or not. cry

You are 100% correct Ian. Dem damned Land Rover mob are as bad as the rest ... and Jeeps.

I guess again it is the difficulty in correctly interpreting the written word - and my failing to be properly expansive in the nomination of vehicles types.

Strangely, it is not the make/model/year of a particular vehicle that harbours those who have little respect for others when travelling ... it is those who travel within the vehicle that are the perpetrators.

I guess, I had better find some way to resurrect this apparently how spoilt Sunday. I might just put my head back in the sugarbag.

Cheers - stay well all and travel safely - John

Morning all, this thread has provided a bit of light relief on an otherwise uneventful Sunday morning.

FWIW I don't see this as a big deal, I reckon Desert Dweller and Rocky Lizard are on the money, people need mind their own business and toughen up a bit.

John I was following this post with some interest even to the point of seeing who would rise to DDs usual baiting. You just had to spoil my day by including Jeeps, I intended giving you a return broadside but then I thought he must be joking because 1) people are fully aware that Jeep owners wouldn't act in that disgusting manner and 2) our van is only 22' so no way was DD having a go at me anyway...biggrinbiggrin

People on here get their knickers in a knot about nothing sometimes. This is one of those occasions. Try lightening up a little.

Desert Dweller is not necessarily a male, we both post opinions/comments on this forum. That's why we have the : Cheers Keith & Judy.  People assume that it's a male commenting but a lot of the time they're wrong.

The majority of the photos are Judy's.

The only people we were having a shot at were the ones bragging about stealing stuff. Pointing out that they weren't poor highlighted their stupidity. They could easily afford to purchase hand soap & toilet paper.

Sign as you leave Eighty Mile Beach Caravan Park ask you to dump your grey water on the road as you leave. I know, different from a servo, but it does help settle the dust.
