I take it you will be going from south of Sydney or there abouts?

Me, I usually go to Townsville from VIC every winter and head up the Hume, Pacific and Bruce. So I personally would go Pacific. I usually do the M7 and M2 mid Sunday morning and find it no problem at all for my 13mt rig.

If you have UHF you will find the trucky channel on 29 NOT 40 along the Pacific.

Keep Safe on the roads and out there.

Hi Wardey coming from the south follow the Hume Hwy until you hit the M7 stay on that to the M2 then follow the M2 until you see the Newcastle off ramp onto Penant Hills Rd. Follow the Penant Hills Rd until you see to the Newcastle signs at the intersection where you will turn right onto the start of the M1. Stay on the M1 all the way until it ends at the Weakleys Drive Beresfield roundabout turn right and follow it a couple of kms to the New England Hwy making sure that you head right towards Newcastle and not left towards Maitland, merge onto the New England and move into the left hand lane when you get the opportunity there is no hurry you have about 5kms before you get to the Hexham bridge. Take the off ramp onto the bridge and keep heading north on the Pacific Hwy all the way up the coast. Its basically all dual carriage way with a couple of recently opened  sections that bypass small towns like Urunga. Pulling a van it will probably take around 7 or 8 hours to Byron from the Hexam Bridge including stopping for regular breaks. You can save yourself a hassle if you get an Emu pass on the NSW govt. web site for the dates that your travelling as any NSW toll road will be billed to your credit card (of course they will charge you a small handling fee). What is the significance of Wyong Road are you intending to sidetrack off the M1 at the central coast for some reason ? Traffic can be congested in Sydney especially on the Pennant Hills Rd section so as Dougwe suggested if you can time your run away from the busier periods it would be a lot less stressful.

Cheers

BB

If you have a Melbourne e-TAG it is usable in Sydney and Brisbane as well. There is no handling charges added to the billing on interstate tags.

Regarding the Pennant Hills Road, the M7/M2 is mostly 2 lane road. When you are on the M2 it widens to 3 lanes (+ bus lane.) When you get to the 3 lane bit head for the LH lane, it exits straight up the Pennant Hills off ramp. When you get onto PHR stick in the centre lane until the centre and RH lane deviate to the right in preparation to exit onto the M1, then just follow the M1 directions painted on the road surfaces. The trucks mainly keep to the centre lane, they may be a little slower off the mark at the lights but they get through just as quickly as those who use the other lanes.

As regards the traffic on PHR, interstaters and country people who don't like traffic detest it. It is no worse than Melbourne or Brisbane traffic. I prefer to travel during the week days and thus steer clear of the wacko weekend warriors. I just aim to keep away from school drop-off and pickup times, travel it between 10:00 and 14:00.

Hi there,

One of the most beautiful coastlines is along the Byron Bay Drive from Lennox Heads/Ballina   to Byron Bay.  A literal paradise for surfers, the scenery is absolutely worth the drive, and miss  highway for a while.

The tea tree lake at Lennox Heads is worth a swim, even in winter.

Cheers

Hello and a very warm welcome.

We went there last year.went to a hamburger shop and a camera crew and a beautiful model turned up. I asked what they were doing? Turns out they were only interested in the sandals she had on her feet. Anyway, be sure  to pay for parking n do not free camp in streets overnight Or u risk being fined. If u want to free camp go to yelgun. Have fun.

And if you are having any health problems then take the time to visit Nimbin. You don't have to buy any wacky baccy - just walk along the street and breathe deeply.

Hello all.

As a matter of interest, I have an E tag for tolls which I purchased in SYdney.  When I use a toll anywhere I call my toll people and give them the date that I travelled and where.  they just transfer the toll charge to my account.

One toll person told me that there are 7 companies in NSW alone that operate tolls. So I am glad to have the little thingy on my windscreen. But I do follow up as I have known other drivers to get quite high fines.

Being a full time Nomad, I get around and so over the years have found that it is well worth the initial outlay for the toll gadget.

Cheers
