Lizards would be probably one of the better ones here.
Along with the Campfires.
Never lit one in 50 yrs (While vanning) and I can't stand stinking greasy barby's meats of any kind.
Well. Meat in general mainly, once a month. Maybe.

And the snoring is easy.
I take my hearing aids in bed. Can't even hear the missus in next bed.
Heaven.
There are some advantages in being an old plant operator. Deafness.
selective and otherwise
And as far as dropkicks.
a good back heel normally sorts them things out when they come yappin'.

Or "OOPS" Sorry. I didn't see the rat there.
When you "accidently" (of course) Stand on it with your heel,
and as much weight as you can visibly get away with,

They'd be about THE most antisocial things in creation.
Even more that whingers hey.

Be happy. Life is shorter than you think,
In a lot of cases.
Missus mate just bolted back to Melb. 49 yr old son had heart attach yesterday.

Qantas VERY good.
one phone call giving name and hospital.
First seat on first plane, and business from Brissie as only avail
seat at sardine can price.

Ah ha, that wonderful mass debate on generators... Cant beat it for a healthy argument.

We live in our caravan 24/7, we dont want to "do it rough", we have solar, a large inverter on 2 100AH batteries, also have a genny (honda 2KVA).

Hot day, genny runs the air con, morning the inverter powers the coffee machine. Once the genny gave us enough juice to top up the battery.

What I am trying to say is... TO EACH HIS OWN.. who gives a crap as long as people are respectable and show constraint.

As has been said over and over, there are folks that love to rough it and those that dont, lets agree to disagree.

BTW, when I use my genny anyone within 100 meters is asked if its OK, if one objects I would move on, so far no objections.

Cheers

I love camp fires.  I don't mind dogs, kids walking thru my site or generators and I usually stay in caravan parks.  Nor do I complain about their fees. Those canvas sided utes with a tinnie on top or a trailer behind, racing along dirt roads or shoulders showering stones everywhere don't worry me much either.  Whiz bangs & back packers are OK too. A/Cs blowing their hot air onto my van are not a worry either.

Flash rigs don't fill me with envy or nor do the old (more decrepid than mine) rigs turn me off.

Must be something wrong with me, judging by some of the proceeding posts.

SWMBO might have the same problem as she uses CP washing machines VERY often & that's another issue. But she doesn't moan about their cost, only finds it a problem if I haven't saved enough $1 or $2 coins to fill our old 35mm film containers..  In fact she is so keen about them that she races off to check them out before I start reversing onto site & setting up.  She returns in time to get me a cup of tea or a coldie.  Works for us.

Oh, almost forgot ... I snore, drive at 80 to 90 & enjoy happy hours & blame SWMBO when I am having trouble reversing onto a site too.  Have even been known to raise my voice at times.  Perhaps this is why she races off to the Amenities block while I set up.

Oh yes, get a gennie if you want to bush camp.  Try those Kippor ones if $s are an issue.  Enjoy the diversity & bugger the wingers.

Isn't freedom a wonderful thing, freedom of speech, freedom to disagree, freedom to own and operate solar, freedom to run a generator etc etc etc. To all the sad ones, all I can offer is to book yourself into "smile school". I have taken the opportunity to enter all the "nasty anti generator folks" comments in my book of useless information. happy travels, happy camping and above all stay safe.

You ALWAYS get whingers in life.

The best treatment for them at all times.
Is to gee 'em up.

The laugh it gives you to yourself.
MORE than makes up for any disagreement
or ill will.

I just laugh as I go on to next post.

Why does name calling become necessary as part of this discussion? It seems often that the anti generator group are more "precious" about things than those they name call.

My experience has been that we hear generators at less than 10% of the camps we go to. On that basis is it so hard to accept one occasionally.

Quite frankly, seeing the attitude of some against those that choose to use a generator at a location where it is allowed, I probably wouldn't won't to make friends anyway.

Good luck ess kapees with your decision and travel.

PS, one thing a generator does win on is weight. A couple of 100 aH batteries and a couple of panels will probably weigh 70 kg, where a 2 kva generator and fuel will run you to 35 kg.

You forgot to add your batteries weight. No one runs just a genny, you still need batteries.

Solar is lighter than a genny.

And doesn't your solar charge Batteries

To run what a 2 kva Genny does.
with solar alone.
You'd need a BIG extension on van roof to take all the panels.

NOT feasible.
Without spending much bigger dollars than what a genny costs.

That's why. even us who've been doing it forever, with both.
Keep a genny in boot.

You KNOW it does.
This could go on forever.
but I notice the Nay Sayers have sorta Hellooooooo, Gone?

Too many Pro's for the Nays hey.

We have 2 gen sets and love them both. They are used when power tools are needed and for the van when required. One is a 1kva which is carried in winter to top up the batteries when solar is not enough which I may add is very seldom and then only run during daylight hours. The second one is carried in summer when because of a health situation is used to run the air con. Which is also very seldom. Now for the original posters query, they are both chinese cheapies one now 7 years old the other 2 years both still going strong. I do not like to use them but sometimes cicumstances dictate that they are warranted. Because we are inland fisherpersons we seldom go to caravan parks .

I was offering what the majority see as an alternative to a generator. You might not like what I have to say but I am sure that the vast majority of serious travellers will agree with me.

Yes, I, hate generators. There is a tiny percentage that use them, and that minority has little regard for how they destroy the peaceful amenity of a campsite for the majority of other campers.

Aren't the statistics of this post interesting?  Up to this point we have 15 members for Generators, 3 members Against Generators and 7 Not Sure or who haven't really indicated for or against.

Members For  15 Generators  : dougwe, madaboutled, Aussie1, the rocket, Eaglemax, Grubbygypsy, rocklizard, Bruce and Bev, macka17, GarrynLyn, Hey Jim, Phil C, Bryan, aussie paul, Onedodger,

Members Against  Generators 3: Desert Dweller, Hylife, DMaxer,

Members Generators? Not Sure 7:  brickies, TheHeaths, Lancelot Link, rgren2, The Belmont Bear, Cupie, Plain Truth,

OP:  esskapees

Even if we added the Not Sure with the Against you would be have 10 against and 15 for.

So my question to those against generators is :

What evidence or statistics can you provide to support your claim that there is only a tiny percentage that use generators? I'm asking here for evidence or recorded statistics and not your personal opinion.

When we were younger. bike, tarp, and a rifle\fishing rod.
Went everywhere.

As you get older. comfort creeps in
Caravan Air cond. Shower cooker TV, heater. etc etc.
Comes with the times.

NOT all have the wherewithal to cover the total solar
needed to cover ALL requirements.
Some do.

BUT 99% of us can afford a genny and decent 40\50w Charger.

That's it. ALL covered. in ALL conditions in ALL States,
why worry and whinge about it.
Use it and be happy.

Earplugs are cheap enuff if you THAT.
disagreeable about \with them.

And they were being used by most.
LOOOOOng before most of you
even thought about camping\vanning, and it's pleasures.

Each to their own is exactly right. I wouldn't even put myself in a 'for gennie' category. But to be told not to run one by someone that leaves home for a few weeks in nice weather or heads to nice weather is a bit rich. Particularly if they partake in annoying behaviours themselves.
End of story there.

It's not the generator that's the problem, it's the owner.. that's the problem, not thinking of anyone else.

I had a Honda 1.0 for many years, used it with my ultimate camper, to charge batteries and keep fridge going when low on gas.

Had no problems as I used it when no one was about, if someone pulled up I would let them know I had a genie going, no problems..

Just ordered a van, which has 4 solar panels and a 3w inverter, bought a Honda 2.0  at same time ( caravan show). I like the back up it provides.

Use it wisely...

Unfortunately Kerry, as you can see from some of the comments, no matter what a generator user does, says or offers, it will not be acceptable to some people.

I always wonder how people work out that their choice or "right", either pro or anti generator, outranks the other persons choice or "right".

I guess I will just die wondering someday!

PS, as a comment regarding my position on generators, it is this. We don't have one. We only camp for a day of two in free camps at a time, and make do without aircon, using a couple of portable panels for battery top up. However, we do accept that we get what we pay for at a free camp, and as such, others have the right to use a generator if they wish, and we have little right to complain. In our time we have not seen any inconsiderate usage, only seeing a generator about 5% of the time. To each their own. For those who do find them such an annoyance, perhaps stay in caravan parks where generators are banned. I know, you don't like parks either.

I think you are absolutely correct KBO18. It is not the generator that annoys me so much, it is the attitude of some people that because they arrived first, or because they have a generator, they are entitled to disregard every other persons enjoyment of a place.

I have had numerous people approach me and inform me that they needed to use a generator and I could not care less. I appreciated the fact that they considered others.

What I really detest are these stand over types who inflict their wishes on every other poor soul nearby. I guess if you are socially bankrupt you would need the generator as most of your time would be spent inside the van away from others.

Dear reasonable people,

The key to this is RESPECT, both in the generator discussion and the use thereof.

If, at a free camp the need arises for the use of a genny (as I have already said) the immediate neighbours should be consulted (note the word consulted) most REASONABLE people will not object.

I like the idea of a choc top, popping out to get one now.

Happy OZ day bunkies.
