Insurance advice

Hi all we're new travellers about to embark on our first big trip. We pick up our new van soon & we're wanting advice on insuring the van. We have quotes from CIL & Suncorp both which are very expensive . Any advice would be appreciated .biggrin

G'day Andy Murray, and welcome to the forum.  Plenty of great advice and folks on here.  Personally we are with CIL, possibly a little more expensive but we felt better cover.  Well worth reading CAREFULLY the product disclosure info.  May be better to ask in general (or search first as has been covered many times before) as not everyone drops into the intro pages.

Welcome Andy we hope you enjoy your time with us and out in the big playground, with regard to your insurance its not just the price its more important to research what the policy offers that meets your requirements.

With insurance we just ring around for the best price as they become due,and save ourselves a mint overall,we will always go with a brand that we feel comfortable with,it would not surprise me if most of them were owned by the same huge organisations ...

Hi. Any insurance. Whichever one you picÄ·, go to forums on them and see what they like at paying out. Some not so good. Go for one with GOOD payout reputation. Dear. Or cheap. They no good if you have to fight them for it We ues RACQ for everything. Mid range costing. Instant payout. BOTH claims. They assessed and paid more than we'd seen to claim. Cyclone damage and Overseas trip.

Now there is a minefield.

I agree that the best thing to do even if it is incredibly tedious is download and thoroughly read each insurers PDS.

We are looking at National Seniors, so far seems to be relatively comprehensive cover at a very reasonable price: Agreed Value $56K includes $1k contents but able to increase this, $500 for emergency repairs, emergency accommodation @ $100 p/n up to $1000 etc $250 excess and a premium of under $900 but, please do your own due diligence.

I guess if money is no object, join the CMCA and take out their insurance with Ken Tame - full cover for just about everything imaginable. Take note that their insurance must cover the caravan and the tow vehicle carries a $1000 excess ($200 excess on glass only claims) and for $56K, $2K contents and $39K+ on our tow vehicle comes with an annual premium of over $2K

Hope this helps and by the way if you have never owned or towed a caravan before, I highly recommend that you undertake a comprehensive caravan towing course!

Wecome to GN's Andy, The Roads Associations tend to offer the better deals for caravan insurance and lower excess - I have been advised that recently (i.e. the last six months) the Insurers are tending to write off caravans that they believe they can make better profits when getting vans back, repairing in own workshops (using Asian parts) and reselling, as prices of caravan repairs by "Caravan Repairers" are becoming too expensive. This is happening with many hail damaged vans.

We're with RACQ for quite a number of policies. Every few years we check around and while no one else has come close for a long time now we still do our homework. Part of the reason for good premiums is the number of policies we hold and another part of the reason is our membership type & level (length of time). We're also fortunate to have a real office locally and I discovered some some ago that the website application process didn't offer every option and variation available. That's when a face to face discussion really helps. I'm assuming you have some form of roadside assistance (if not, why not ?) and if that's your state motoring club you definitely should investigate other benefits like insurance premium discounts. So far we still haven't needed to claim so have no first hand advice there.

We use RAA for all but our van, that is because RAA would not insure for an agreed value at the time (2005)

Looked at all others available and SGIC was the ONLY one who did. It was expensive, not as as much as C.I.L. is / was, we have stayed with SGIC since AND have had very good service from them.

Consult a broker to do the tedious part. They work for YOU not for the insurer.
As an aside, if I was an insurer, I would refuse to insure any aluminium skinned van. One decent hail storm and they are a write off. Premiums MUST be expensive.
Cheers,
Peter

Welcome.

Since retiring we have always insured with one of the Motoring Bodies. RACQ and before that the RAA.
Both have offered good coverage with a reasonable price.
I have never had to use it but they do offer assistance with vehicle recovery and some accomodation if required.
I think those bodies are worth a look and quote.
