INDEFINITE NOMADS - LOVE STORY

I am thinking of selling my house and travelling indefinitely.  Don't want the responsibility of paying off a mortgage and working till I die.  How brave do you have to be? Is there anyone out there with any encouraging comments.  Wonder too if there are any love stories out there for the lone traveler, not talking about short term hook-ups, but the real lasting thing.

Hello Chellbells

We are all different, and therefore we are all happy doing things that others are not too happy, about doing
All the people I meet on the road, in the free camps, and myself, seem to be happy with our lot

But...
We all see many near new recreation vehicles for sale
I will assume that some people have tried, but found that they (for whatever reasons) did not like travelling

Perhaps if you went out on the road for a few short trips, prior to selling up, just for some peace of mind
Regardless of what you decide, I sincerely hope that when on the road, you have many happy travelling trips ahead of you

Sounds like sound advice Tony. I was going to sell up about 6 yrs ago but things didn't go as planned so I still have my house but not enough money to do what I want. It's an issue many face.

There are "love" story's everywhere. and sad ones.

Sort that out yourself. I was very happy by myself for near 20 yrs after divorce.
And quite happy now after remarry.

Be VERY careful about flogging your home.
Make sure you keeep enough back and untouched to buy a Unit. Old folks home, etc.

VERY FEW can manage to travel till they die in the real world.
And be mentally comfortable with it.

I've travelled since I was 9 or so. Full time since 13 yrs.
At 75 I'm a bit too comfortable in a house again.
Sold yacht and big van. Just a little 535 Coromal now to keep independance.

94% will find they NEED a home base of some sort when they get "Not so" Physically independant any more.

Just think about it for a coupla yrs first. Seriously. You could regret.

I KNOW of a lot who have.
After it too late.

1\2 time over. Bloody NSW in lead.
Have to go out there with a baseball bat for Enniss and mates I think.
They play real dirty footy all season then get in finals. Mind you Melb not much betterer hey.

The true Finals game was played a coupla weeks ago when you look back on them.

Queensland. Again..

I bought an affordable house in a country town. Means I will have a home base if I need it down the track. Also bought an affordable rig. Not heading out full time for another 3 1/2 years so will know if the rig I have recently bought will be sufficient for my needs. If I need to get something a bit better or moderner (is that a word?) I am open to selling my home base. Never say never.

As others have suggested, try before you buy to make sure it is what you want long term.

As for love? Well I can't really comment on that. Twice bitten, now shy. :)

A few years ago I convinced daughter's neighoour's mother that she could travel safely as a solo & off she went. Met the man of her dreams & is happy still. Alice

I did it (sold up not fell in love lol).
Bought van and tug. Been travelling happily for the last 6 years. I did it before though when I was 17 until 22, so I knew I was going to like it at least. Did a lot more outside that too...like had a whizzbanger (I always stick up for backpackers lol) to get around in when I was tied to having to live life like everyone else expected. I haven't regretted a minute of it. I'm looking for a block right in the sticks somewhere that I can set up to have as a home base - haven't really found 'the' area yet though. Oh....the other thing that made it easier for me is I hated where I lived (always have hated it since I first left the state) so it's no hassle not to have a house there!! I figure as long as I don't spend my capital - then at least I can buy again if I have to.
Love......I met a couple on the road that had met travelling and they still had their own rigs but just travel side by side lol.....how awesome is that??? Cos I think I'd last all of about two seconds having someone in my van!!! I'd be on a murder charge. Went away with my bestie for 4 days a year or so back and OMG!!!
You don't my need to be that brave. You do need a lot of common sense though. I always get the "how do you do it?" Questions from people - but it's easy really...until situations arise (power, tyres etc). You have to be able to learn all that stuff to live comfortably.

I'm doing the same, traded the old van in and went smaller. Retired and going to find a place where I can put my backside down where I can say I am finally at home. I will rent the house, or sell it and put the money somewhere, probably in a pocket until I am at an age I don't have to pay tax! I figure I've got ten to fifteen years on the road to achieve this.
Chellbells, you don't have to be brave, you just have to want to do it. I am really agitated about my first trip in the new van, I haven't got it yet. The big thing for me is getting back into it and enjoying the community of the road. It is a life changer but I have to adjust to the biggest change in that I will be partnerless.
I'm not out looking for love, if it happens, bonus, if it doesn't, I can always go fishing!

Please don't be agitated - or at least save it until you drive your first metre . I kept my negative thoughts right at the back  of my mind and continued to rise to the surface each time it tried to tell me I was nuts (not to mention the humans that give you all the negatives because they're too scared to leave the comfort of their mundane lives).

It boils down to a common saying "if you dont try you will never know"
We are all different and the hardest break is the first and it gets easier as you go along.
Listen to all the suggestions but NONE will be you so you have to put it all in a mulcher (your brain) save what suits you discard the rest and just do what YOU want.
You can get killed walking across the road so if you spend x years on the road having a ball and then something happens so what. Better to die happy and content than to wonder what could have been and die sad and lonely but safe in a cardboard castle.

We befriended a Young 70 yrs of age Lady who I'll call Jane in Tassie travelling by herself in a small motorhome in 2013 been travelling for a few years. We crossed paths with her twice on the mainland.

Then in 2014 I Befriended a Young 70 yrs of age Sth African chap who I'll call Jim in Victoria, been in Australia 40 yrs, separated and started travelling 2yrs ago.

Then when we stopped at Ararat in 2015, Jim rocks in at Green Hill Lake camp area, then next day Kim (my Wife) notices a M/Home drive past that looks like Janes. So Kim gives her a call and Jane turns around and comes to where we are camped, within minutes of arriving we introduce Jim and Jane and then before you know it they are driving into town in his Nissan XTrail for coffees, then lunch. Anyway one thing leads to another and even though they still have their own Rigs they travel together everywhere. Both have found new loves in their lives.

As I say to Jim, if Kim hadn't seen Jane drive past that day they might never have met through us, Fate I think it is called.

What a Happy, madly in Love couple of 70 yrs of age young they are and both terrific people and friends to us.

So it is possible for Solo Travellers to find new love.

Cheers Kev.

I also know "Jane", but didn't meet "Jim" a while ago in Murwillumbah Showgrounds - was a surprise when she knocked on our door - hadn't seen her for about 3 years or so - she told us the story Kev just related - and she is one very happy lady -got it all!!!

It can, and does, happen, believe me - travelling is the best way to meet people.

Getting closer. The hardest thing for me was deciding to sell my lovely home. You guys are right, why die in it. Getting used to the idea of buying something small along the way. Still have a share in deceased parents house on Central Coast anyway. Been reading and building my arsenal in the interests that I have that can be used on the road. Thinking everything through takes time, got to let your mind get used to it also. Can't wait to make lots of friends with other Nomads. Still have some house repairs and selling off of furniture, etc. Will have to share accom, for a while to buy rig & sell car. Hardest thing is, do I want a 4X4 towing small rig or all in one 4X4. Benefits of having 4X4 + rig means I could unshackle and go fossicking in more places which I could not get to with a coaster 4X4. Also easier to park for town trips.
