blogs, etc. keeping SOME family and friends updated on travels

Hi everyone. My husband and I are leaving in November in a 20 ft caravan to do the BIG lap for a year possibly longer. I would like to share our travels, photos, etc. with friends and family but not all my Facebook friends. I am wary of a closed FB group as others can still see posts in others pages. Do you keep a blog and if so, how to do as it sounds difficult to do. We are not very tech savvy, but would be willing to try any suggestions of others who do this. Thanks Nomads.

I don't actually do a 'Blog' and was on Facebook but didn't like it so got off.

I just email family and friends monthly with my happenings for the previous month. I also do a 'Monthly Update' for the forum to let all here know what I have or not have been up to for the month. I always include about 6 photo's to do with my update. I always reduce the file size of the pics to 25% first. That way doesn't chew into anyone's data allowance.

Keep safe on the roads.

If it is a closed, private group on Facebook no one but those you invite can see what you post...that is my understanding anyway. I blog and then post it to a private group that I have created, no one but people from the group can access it. Hope I have that correct. The blog is great way to keep a journal of your trip. Cheers

We do the same as leajoy. Private group and just invite those you would like to keep in touch with to join. No one else can see.

I have a web page but it comes at a cost when you have your own domain name and use a server. There are user friendly blog servers that are free, remember tho if you use anything on the web that is free someone is getting something about you.

I like closed Facebook groups to a certain degree but they become hard to navigate the larger they get, you can never find that old post you want to have another look at.

Blogger and Wordpress are the main two blogs. Wordpress is better if you want to take it further (later down the track) if you want a website. Lots of youtube tutorials videos online. Start off with a basic blog and keep it simple or get involved with a website, you will enjoy it once you get started

Hi MUX1.

I started using wordpress a couple of months ago. Looked at Blogger but needed google password so went with wordpress. Still trying to find my feet with it but it is really simply (?) to use.

Hello MUX1

My wife uses facebook to keep in contact with family and friends, when we travel

I believe that the secret is not to put anything down in print, which may come back to bite you on the backside

Tongue in cheek
Either we have more family and friends, than I know about, or the wife is itemising every single mistake I make.
Because I can never get my nose into the laptop, while travelling

Greetings MUX1,

My wife and I will also be departing on a large series of adventures soon (Feb 2017) and I have been wondering the best way to keep certain folk updated and in touch. So, to suggest something a little different from Facebook etc I am going to use an application (App) called, Whatsapp. This little program is installed on iphones, Androids, PCs etc of the people you wish to stay in contact with. It will allow a running commentary, sounds, messages (even videos) and of particular use is that it works over both 3G/4G and Wifi. So, even if you are somewhere where there is no phone signal an internet cafe can still enable you to update your contacts via wifi only. We use this App to stay in touch with our son who is travelling in Spain and have used it on a substantial European trip last year with great success.

Whatsapp is used by something approaching 1 billion users (now owned by Facebook) and is free from advertising (currently). You can create Groups so that updates only go to select people. Of course everyone who you wish to update would need to install Whatsapp but some may already have it. Installing, adding users etc is fast and easy and there are many places on the Internet where additional assistance can be obtained. Go to: https://www.whatsapp.com/ and have a look around.

Paul & Wendy
