Towards the end of August / early September, I'll be doing the "Wheatbelt Way" over a week or so, at a leisurely pace. I may extend it to two weeks and swing over to Mulewa and return via Geraldton. I last visited Mulewa two years ago and the wreath flowers were in full bloom, some orchids around too if you looked hard enough.

Aaaah, one more week to go before I retire.

Hey Jim,  "Boy" you sure have picked a back Country  road to travel on, as far as I know, there is only one stop for fuel on that road of over 700km in length,

There used to be fuel available at Gascoyne Junction, but that got washed away in floods a couple of years back, they could have rebuilt is since then, but I haven't heard anything since,

If you do go that way, you will miss a heap of pretty country, such as Kalbarri Gorge, and I can tell you, the Fush & chups are the best at the shop with-in walking distance of the River View Caravan Park in Kalbarri, the Fish is straight off the boats that anchor in the river in front of the Park and couldn't be any fresher.

You will also miss Monkey Mia, Denham, ( Shark Bay ) and Coral Bay, all Costal towns and some of the best Coast Line in W.A,

There are plenty of good Fush & chup Shops in Perth, and I bet BRUCE can find the best around, as for a few Bottles of the RED, we now have Come- of- age here in the West, with the opening of the ALDI stores through out the district, no shortage of cheap Red's now !!!

Anyhow, have a great trip JIM, we may run into you somewhere along the way.

Cheers  K.J.

Hi Kiwijim,

I have always wanted to travel this road. Yes the old pub got washed away. They have built a new one. The 160km stretch from Carnarvon to Gas Coin is now sealed.

We are always turning left. So the truck is fitted out to carry 250lt of diesel, for the longer journeys, till we find another right hand turn. There is fuel also at Murchison settlement or Murchison, food and camping ground.( BYO only).wink Not long till wagons ho. It will take the rest of our lives to see whats down the next dirt road.

Bruce will check out the Fush & Chups hang outs before hand.evileye

Regards Jim & Lambie

Howdy Jim,  That's good to hear that they have rebuilt the Pub at Gascoyne,  The last time I was out that way the seal finished just out of Carnarvon,  Back in those days ( early 70's ) the road was nothing better than a sandy track, in places it was that bad I thought I may have taken a wrong turning, that was until an old Land-rover came along with about 20 Black Fella's in it, they said, you" keep goin Ah" Ya can't miss it, look for the tin shed,

We found the tin shed about an hour later and that was about all there was there at Gascoyne at that time.

I Goggled the road and you can see how far the seal now goes, although it appears to be only a one way road, it has to be a great improvement on what they had out there in the never-never,

With a bit of luck, you may still see some Wildflowers blooming but it may be too late by the time you go through there, not to worry, there will be plenty more as you head South.

If you carry on after going through Mullewa, make sure you call into Coal Seam National Park, there is always a great show of Flowers there, you can camp there as well, I think it only costs about $10 pre night for a Caravan, might even be cheaper with a Pensioner Discount.

Happy travels to you both, you've got the right idea, check out every road, you have the rest of your Retirement now to go where you want and see all you can,

Cheers  Jim

Hi Jim,

If you scroll through road conditions you will find a blog (Carnarvon - Mullewa Road with lots of photo's.) It open to 2WD so I don't have an issue following an adventure. We are fully self reliant for ten days at a time. We have scouted around at the Mullewa end with the boat in tow. There are heaps of flowers in the area And we are looking for a perfect reef flower.

I wanted to do this section/Road in 2008. But we had issues with our tow hitch near Steep Point and had to make for Geraldton ASPS.

So this time with a custom Hitch, that I had made after we came back home. Its never failed again. Its made from solid bar, plus $$ to get made.smilesmile

Hope catch you out there one day.

Regards Jim

Hey Jim:  There are some pic's of my trip on the Carnarvon - Mullewa way via Murchison Roadhouse I did in 2014 including the new bitumen road between Carnarvon and Gascoyne Junction.   Fuel Tip:  It is cheaper to buy fuel at Murchison Settlement Roadhouse as it is owned by the council (as is the settlement) it is about 10c cheaper than Gascoyne Junction and Mullewa except that the BP at Mullewa is around the same price or was, the other servo there (where you book into the CP) is dearer.   You can buy food to eat at the Roadhouse and a few deli type items as well, but better to take your own.

http://thegreynomads.activeboard.com/t57616454/lightning-trip-to-murchisongascoyne-region-may-2014/

I did the GJ to Mullewa road in a 2WD however there are some water crossings and the road can be closed in wet weather, so need to check with Murchison Council or the Gascoyne Junction/Mullewa end before you go.

See this link;  http://thegreynomads.activeboard.com/t57615816/new-gascoyne-junction-caravan-park-roadhouse-wa-171-kms-east/

While there do a side trip to Kennedy Range National park, dirt road 100 kms return (50 each way).   Only a small camping area there, so ok for small rigs, best to leave caravan at Gascoyne Junction CP and do a day trip, you have to cross the Gascoyne River in town as well (concrete crossover) was about 8 inches deep when I went over, but can be more, check with council in town/tourist bureau.    Road out to Kennedy can be very muddy if it's been raining.

Hi Weevil,

Yes I was refering to KiwiJim of your last post or two, thanks for the extra's.

We are traveling in a few weeks time, in our new Jayco Journey Outback. Which I have been completing some extra work on, to meet our needs for true remote road travel, including a Stone Stomper guard. We have just retired, and in between work its been a lot getting everything right for this adventure. We will be Carnarvon way in September, heading south in time for the wild flower season again.

Regards Jim & Lambie

Hi Jim, I went up via Mullewa, the Tourist Office there went online and told me the road was open.   When I got about half way I came to a large sign that said "Road Closed".   The sign gave a number to ring to make enquiries, but despite having bigpond and blue tick (country reception) phone, I was out of range.

I was sitting there in my vehicle contemplating my next move when a cattle truck went hurtling past, so taking a punt he had a radio and on Channel 40 I gave him a call and asked about the road.  He responded and said he had checked with the mail truck that morning and the driver who had already been through said it was ok.   So I proceeded to Murchison Settlement.   When I got there, the Roadhouse manager was surprised I got through as the road was closed, especially for 2WD vehicles.

In regards to the managers of the Roadhouse at Murchison Settlement (husband wife team) if they are still the same one's there, they were terrific and nothing was too much trouble for them.   You can see in the link I posted the modern ablution block and green lawns etc in the CP.   They also told me they can do a trade off for CP fees against odd jobs that need doing around the place if anyone is interested.

I would have to say that the trip I did from Gascoyne Junction to Carnarvon (call into Rocky Pool for a look on the way), side trip at GJ to Kennedy Ranges, and from Murchison Settlement (totally owned by Murchison council and populated by them) to there from the Mullewa end was one of the best trips I had done.    Some also go from GS or Murchison Settlement to Mount Augustus, depending on road conditions.   The council being based at Murchison Settlement are the best to advise on that via the roadhouse there.

Sounds good, I wish you a good and safe trip.

The blowholes just north of Carnarvon are worth a trip, bitumen all the way in to the coast, then left to the camp there or right to Quobba station.   I saw gas balloon fishing there for the first time, interesting stuff, the wind needs to be blowing the right way away from the shore.

Hi Vic,

Yes the blow holes are one of our stopovers. I have seen both mega Tailor and spanards stories from their. 2008 was a rush for lambie and myself 14 weeks full lap anti clockwise. Now we can settle back after getting back over to the west coast.

I could call the Westcoast above Carnarvon home. I like the heat, Lambie does not share my same ideals.hmm Fine for three months of the year. Full time well.confuse

We have tried June - Aug 2010.  April - June 2012. June- Aug 2014 all in the Boat/ cabin tent. Off to China next week for two weeks, then wagons ho in the new van with combo shower/ loo.( Browie points you see,) Keep the little lady happy. This trip is just, take it as it comes.

Next year back to the boat/ tent again. Never know a self storage lockup for the boat would suit us even better.

Cheers Jim

Sounds good Jim, hope you enjoy China, the TV series on China have been mind blowing.

Some friends had their bag snatched from under a table at a café, also some other friends had theirs snatched on a low bridge, they put their bag down to take a photo and a hand came up from under the bridge, snatched it and ran......like anywhere you have to be aware of petty thieves.....

My nephew and his mates just returned from riding motorcycles touring China, they had a ball!

Regards the blowholes, that can get a bit congested at the camping area, however is SWMBO wants power for aircon then Quobba station is the way to go (google their page for rates etc) both powered and unpowered sites available, also hot showers and not so congested, the Sydney Memorial on the way into Quobba is great also (where some of the German crew came ashore and were captured, also Carly floats from the Sydney etc).
