Lightning Trip To Murchison/Gascoyne Region - May 2014

I have just returned from a 8 day trip to the subject regions, unfortunately I had to return due to appointments etc which could not be put off.

In brief, I travelled from Perth to Mullewa via the inland route, then to Murchison, Gascoyne Junction, Kennedy Ranges, Rocky Pool, Quobba Blowholes, Quobba Station, Carnarvon and Coronation Beach Camp and the odd free camp from Camps book along the way.

Here are some links with photo's etc if you are interested in the journey;

Not on this one Wombat, she had appointments, so just a quick trip for me to places I had missed out on before, as you know you need to be at Carnarvon or above for the good winter weather at present.

Not a lot of RV's on the road, mostly overseas ones but I would imagine this will pick up in June, also when those from the north start heading down this way later.

My main goals were Murchison, Gascoyne Junction, the Kennedy Ranges and the Blowholes as I had never been there before.

I went into Carnarvon (been there a number of times in the past) but didn't stay there and headed south to a free camp in the camps book.

We're might glad to hear that you had a safe trip Vic,

Many thanks for the pictorial of your trip, very very interesting.

Was thinking of you while we camped at Cliff head North, could see that storm brewing out to sea, we managed to escape that O.K. now back at home until we get another caravan, then off on the Wild Flower tour ( around Sept ) through the same area that you have just traversed.

Cheers  K.J.

The Hyundai is going well CC, got lots of dust in outside the seals but luckily the water didn't go over the floor level on the river crossings.

The Gascoyne had been up to over a metre a few days before at the Junction crossover.

KJ, I would take a caravan from Carnarvon to Gascoyne Junction (all double sealed but watch the animals). but would be reluctant to take it over the other roads, especially the crossings.

Here is a number for the cp at Gascoyne Junction but see the shire there or ring them for info on the crossing and road in the area, or Murchison Settlement shire if you do decide to head that way.

"Accommodation within the township of Gascoyne Junction is currently available at the Junction Pub & Tourist Park. Cabins, Caravan Park with ensuites avaliable as well as camping grounds. Please call (08) 9943 0868 for any bookings or enquiries."

Doug, the scoop worked well, I didn't see one Wombat, musta scared them off wink biggrin biggrin biggrin

Thanks Dunmowins, sorry I wasn't able to spend more time up there but had to get back.   I could feel the weather getting colder once I left the Carnarvon zone heading south.   Hope you're having fun in Derby, I know you will be! biggrin

PS:  Is the road out to Windjana Gorge and Tunnel Creek from Derby and then out to the highway from Tunnel Creek sealed now?

Not sure vic, we are going on the GRR, part (small part) is sealed, but I don't know in relation to your question.  If I find out, I will let you know.  Boy is it hot up here.

Derby was fairly humid last time I was there, so hope it is not too bad, it will give the aircon a work out anyway when inside. smile

Should improve soon hopefully if it is humid as the days slip by. smile

Actually, I think Broome was worse, we had to pay extra for aircon in the caravan park.

Am  I reading correct ???  They are charging extra to use your air con, on top of their already exorbitantly high prices. !!!!!!

It.s no wonder that most visitors never return to Broome, Once bitten twice shy.

some CP do this and Broome is one of them because they know you have no choice, Broome is a one visit only then drive past on your next way up there. IMHO

Yes, KJ, we paid $45.00 for a waterfront powered site, and if we wanted to run our aircon, we paid an extra $4.00 per day.  So we didn't, we were hardly "home" for the duration, and the sea breeze sort of drifted in over the evening,  Derby is better.  We are paying $40.00 per night (powered), nice clean amenities (new), police patrol the site frequently, the locals are friendly.  Tomorrow the Gibb River Road.
