We have found that the serial number of a dual fuel appliance installed in our caravan is different to the serial number of the appliance shown on the documents submitted to the gas authorities for certification and approval, therefore this appliance is a illegal connection and not approved.
I could be wrong but a "serial number" is a unique number assigned to your particular appliance when manufactured - if it was No. 6 then the next identical one is No. 7, so the gas authorities would not have tested your No.6 but an identical unit from the production line - it could be No. 124
Maybe it's a model or series number they quote.

THe authorites are hardly going to test every appliance sold, so common sense would say the make, model, series etc that would be shown on the approval paperwork.

A model has a number of serial numbers allocated to that appliance at time of manufacture.
A sample unit is used as a test sample when being tested for compliance approval to Australian Standards.
When a gas installer approves an appliance installed in a application e.g. caravan he lodges his compliance certificate to a gas authority stating the serial number of the appliance confirming it is installed and working according to the various gas regulations and laws however the serial number of the appliance installed is different to the serial number on his form therefore making the appliance installed not approved.
This now could effect our insurance on the caravan because we do not have an approval.
Check your gas appliances are what has been lodged to the gas authority by the installer.

Maybe you have the right appliance and the wrong paper work.

Seriously, the way to fix this is to peel off the serial number and throw it in the bin. If there is ever an issue with insurance, you just act dumb and say it has always been like that.

Hi migra,
I am struggling to grasp the difficulty you seem to fear here. I am aware of the approval process in general terms.
Is it that you fear the insurance company will trawl through your caravan looking for a 'let-out' if you have a collision or fire or hailstorm or whatever. If that is the case then perhaps it is time to get in the bunker and lock the door.
If the appliance that was correctly installed in a van is faulty and replaced under warranty, or for any other reason, by an identical unit will the gas fitter apply to the gas authority for 'permission' to do that. Even in your house ? I think not, and indeed I do not lie awake at night worrying about these things. Life is for living and I try to ignore the unimportant details.
Maybe I'm paranoid, but I would be concerned that, if there were a gas related incident, the authorities would be looking for a cause, in which case a mismatch in the serial numbers may lead them to suspect that the appliance was self installed. OTOH, I'd be concerned that contacting the van manufacturer might open a can of worms and make matters worse. Should one let sleeping dogs lie?
Incidentally, if the same serial number were submitted more than once, would the authorities catch the error?

I am of the same thought as yourself Jaahn. "Life is for living and I try to ignore the unimportant details. "
Fortunately we are all not the same and have differing attitudes to life experiences. Not really a right or wrong, just different!!
If this is used van the original unit could have been replaced due to fault. Exact same model replaced but will have a different serial number, should have been noted on paperwork just hasn't been.
