RE: Why is it ?

Right , that's it ,

John , you can stay back after school and write out 100 times "this thread is not about me" and you can't go home till youve finished .

Look , in all seriousness the reason I started this topic is simply ,as I've already stated, I know people who won't join in on this or most other forums for the very reason I outlined in my first post. I am certain that this forum and other's are worse off because their absence.

What can we do ? I dont know , probably nothing , I just find it frustrating.

And one last time , this is NOT about Rock Lizard , Brikies , cowboy or any other individual .

Cheers Al

I'm on 3 other forums that have nothing to do with travelling Australia.  I find on this forum I feel vulnerable.  On 2 occasions that I posted I felt attacked, other forum members did  come out and defended me, but I sometimes have an opinion on a subject but I will never post.  There is a lot of good information on here that I appreciate.

It makes me unhappy to hear that people feel intimidated by some on this forum - I have never felt that way, have been on for going on six years now, and log in every day - some people who have taken offense on this thread, are maybe being a bit sensitive - as someone said earlier - there is no voice inflection when you use the written word - if I think a thing is a bit "sus" I read it to myself with differing inflections - putting emphasis on different words - and if it still sounds "pushy" - I will have my say - or ask the poster what they mean - politely, and on the open forum, not through the private message system.

The forum is full of terrific information as Felicia says, and it is a shame that some people are missing out. I know we have had some confrontations occasionally, but I have found that most of them are big boys beating their chests, if you know what I mean.

Much nicer to just answer the question again. maybe the asker has simply forgotten they posted that question previously. happens to some as they age. Have a good day n don't sweat the small stuff. If seeing a question asked a second time is the worst thing to happen to u today then u r doing ok. Keep smiling, stay happy everyone. Rocket

Great post Jules, and I agree.

And yes, by all means answer the question if you have relevant information, but it also helps to point out the search function, where it is a common, often asked question. Also some new members may not be aware of the search function, and there may be other information, that has been posted previously, by some of the more knowledgeable members who are no longer with us.

Swoffer made a good point in another thread about opening older posts, and tacking onto the end of them with questions or updated information. It helps to bring that info back up and makes it easier when doing searches. You don't get a whole series of topics with minimal information, but rather, fewer threads with more meaningful information and less repetition.

Another good idea when starting a thread is to use tags. This also enhances the search function.

I just performed a search for "tags" and from the results I'm still in the dark simply because the majority of replies in the threads went all over the place never actually describing them and how to use them to (possible?) advantage.  They were like a family gathering with the questions never being directly answered or more accurately like asking a politician a direct question.

Maybe that's why people ignore the search button plus if you ask a direct answer it avoids having to read all the chit-chat that most threads found in a search seem to end up being.

Good Luck

Sorry, forget the bit about "tags" it seems the search function is rather more cludgy than I thought. On many forum, adding tags to your threads when you start one, enhances the search function. Tags are words that you add in the section at the bottom of the "Start a new Topic" page.

Edit: and re the "chit chat" that's why many of us grumpy old men get ticked off when posts degrade into general chatter, especially in the thechies subforum. Although these days you just expect it to happen. Especially since this is a very informal forum without the strict posting rules of more serious forums.

I guess there are also problems depending on the device and/or operating system being used to access the forum as well.

This is what my "Start a New Topic" screen looks like. As you can see it is quite different to what you seem to see on your device/pooter.

There is no ability to 'tag'.

Actually, using Google, as suggested by Dorian back here

is the best way to search the site.

Example: type this into Google search -  site:thegreynomads.activeboard.com - followed by what you want to search for

I think the Grumpy old men thread is a few further up, chaps. Just listen to yourselves!

But I know you all have a smile on your dial, good fun, hey!
