We have a Journey Outback 17.55 8 and have installed a diesel heater under the bed and found it to be excellent, no smells at all. You might like to refer to the search column. (A Must Have). Bessie
No smell in ours . Outside maybe on first fire up but you have to close to smell it from outside . No issues with ours .. Hardly ever needs turning up higher temp than low . Very efficient and quiet ., it has approx 2m intake hose which seems to keep it very quiet .,

We have a Eberspacher Dometic in our little Avan. Had it about 5 years. There is no smell of Diesel or Diesel Exhaust fumes in the van from the Unit under the bed. Slight smell on start up when it is cold from the exhaust which is outside. You have to be standin by the exhaust to smell it and it is not bad at all.
Fresh combustion air drawn in from under the van is mixed with diesel and burnt efficiently. This is exhausted outside the van.
The combustion takes place within a heat exchanger in the unit. Air inside the Van is drawn in and heated on the outside if the Heat exchanger, then blown back out into the van. Recirculated.

Do it yourself diesel heater are very easy to install. Just check under van when drilling holes, you do not want a hole in your water tank or through a gas line.

We to have JJO 17.55-3 If you are handy I would buy and install yourself. We are buying off Flea Bay before hitting the road. I'm in the process of correcting all the wrongs on ours. I would allow $600 for labour from them.
First off. Thank you for the advice and showing me about the search section. I never realised it was there. Are you happy with you van. We get our the end of April.
Thanks jim for you answer. Your van looks like ours and it scares the hell out of me. I will do some of the driving and the van looks so big. We have a hard floor camper trailer at the moment. Will get our van near the end of april
If you are getting any smell inside the van it means that your heater has not been installed properly. Any gas or diesel heating or cooling unit must draw its combustion air from outside and exhaust the combustion products to the outside air. If you get any smells after a period of sucessful operation then it means the device has developed a problem somewhere, get it fixed before you gas yourself.
