Filling the freshwater tank

Hi all, I have a puzzling problem, when I fill my freshwater tank and it approaches full, water flows out of the overflow pipes on each side of the motor home. However when I turn off the tap the water continues to pour from the overflow pipes for several minutes before stopping, emptying at least 10 or more litres on the ground. it seems as if there maybe some siphonping effect going on but I can't stop it. My gauge will then sometimes show only 75% full. Does anyone have any ideas how to stop this?

cheers

Greg

When water commences to flow out of the overflow you will find there is a considerable amount of water up your filler pipe. The overflow will continue until all the water in the filler pipe runs out.

Thanks Peter, I checked that, by re adding more water after it had stopped, I was able to put back many litres so it would seem to be draining more than what would be in the filler pipe. Another clue that might help is I noticed a gurgling sound when it was reaching full. So when I tried to top it up, I stopped just when I thought I heard the gurgling sound, so was able to top up with many litres and no over flow, very confusing I must say.

Cheers
Greg

Greg & Shas.Make sure the water tank's vent pipe is about 40-50% the size of the fill pipe because airlocks can occur. Does this problem occur when you're on uneven ground, say leaning towards the fill point side? Does it occur if you're trying to fill the tank full speed water pressure and not if you're dribbling it in? Do you have an interior fill point as well where the tank top can be unscrewed to allow air ingress when filling? This can be quite annoying eh.

Thanks Sheeds, wow quite a lot to check there, so I will work through them, thanks for your suggestions, oh btw, in am filling on level ground and yes, a reasonable flow not dribble but not to fast either.

Cheers
Greg

If water is going in faster than the air is getting out of the tank you then have a pressurised tank that will force water out until the pressure in and outside of the tank equals.

Too true Paul.

A risk is that you then blow the filler hose off the INSIDE of the van connection and fill the van with water,,, just ask me,,,, I did this accidentally by not paying attention. Never again.
