Untrue Statements on WIKI Camps

Hi all

We are presently staying at a free camp in W.A called the Lake which is on a working cattle station and over the last week there have been untrue statements put on Wiki regarding No Dogs.

1       There were 2 couples with dogs that I went upto and politely told them that this was a working cattle station and the cows were all calving and that no dogs were allowed, they proceeded to tell me how good their dogs were and when I again pointed out it was a No dogs allowed that was also sign posted on the gate as you came in they got a bit offended but decided to leave.   On Wiki a couple of days later it said that I was very abusive and just wanted the place for myself (even though there were plenty of others there)

2        A near blind lady came in with her guide dog who was extremely well behaved never leaving her side and who allowed the cows to just walk past and took no notice at all of them. Then on Wiki it said that the woman wasn't realy blind she just wanted to get her dog in

What I don't get is why do people bother putting up lies re a free site and what do they hope to gain. I know it takes all sorts but these incedents have just got up my nose.

I feel better now I've got that off my chest

Hi madcart

I can understand the anger you may have toward these folks and the "rules" of the camp site.

I guess one of the major issues with things like wikicamps is the situation where people can really write whatever comes into their heads with very little monitoring or compliance to rules.

I have been an advocate for wiki ever since I first saw it, however there is no excuse for writing such untruths, as you say, in the comments. I would advise that you try to contact wiki (via the net) with screen shots etc to get the comments removed, and perhaps the poster told off.

All the very best for a safe trip.

Make sure you go to the minor trouble of reporting such things to Wiki Admin and put a comment on the site saying your peace. It's a great Info site and we all need to use it, make comments, add sites, pics etc etc to make it work as best it can.

I tend to check all comments and pics if I haven't been there before to get a full picture, then make my mind up from there.

Golly - I agree with the Chief - how about that !!

Its always interesting to look at the comments on wiki - there may be 20+ and all rave about the place. Then one person bad mouths it - "staff rude, dirty toilets" and so forth.

In the case that Dizzy makes - there was a sign at the entry to the FREE camp saying No Dogs - so irrespective of what was on Wiki, they had no right to bring their dogs in.

If you want to be called "Sir" or "Madam" and have the front door opened, go pay $200+ a night and stay at a 5 star hotel like the Hyatt or Sheraton.

Im staying today at a showground for $15. I get a level site, power, good water and TV reception. The toilets are very clean (if old) and it has 4 ply paper - even Big4's don't have that! Only one shower - clean, but a bit gloomy looking - but it will do.

My other option was to stay at one of the two CP's - the cheapest was $35 pn. I don't need a swing or slide

I believe at times caravan park owners put in negative comments to discredit their competition.

Many of the comments on wiki are a complete controdiction of previous comments. Unfortunately these people exist.

I tend to look at the overall comments on any site and accept the view of the majority.

If the majority opinions are favourable I will give the premises a try and form my own opinion.

It is almost impossible to satisfy all of the people all of the time.

I have only recently downloaded Wiki Camps and find it to be a useful site, well worth the few dollars it cost.

Wiki Camps is a great site.

Just don't take too much notice of the comments part.

Madcart in the situation that you were in at the camp I would have left it up to who ever was supervising the camp to tell them no dogs were allowed .

We went to a free camp because it was well commented that it was a great place to be. Turned out to be a dusty patch behind a pub, we drove on to the next place. This has happened twice over the past year.

Goes to show, one persons junk, another's treasure. Unfortunately for wiki it's only 99% on the ball as it relies on individual comments from us. We choose what we are going to say. Overall its still a pretty good app for all the other things it offers.

Cheers

Hi Brickies

There was no one in charge of the free camp to ask people not to bring dogs but there was a big sign on the gatesmile

Hi Dougwe

I don't have Wiki camps on my computer but when I get my tablet I will be loading it on there. I think the trouble is with wiki camp having no moderator on their site.

It's a good idea to take all the comments with a grain of salt, and try and form an overall opinion based on all comments. Then check out the photos to try and guage the suitability of the site. An idea of the type of country the site is in helps too eg. sites up through the centre will probably be dusty patches behind roadhouses, around bores etc.

Agree with all that has been said.. grain of salt sounds like a plan..
