My newly purchased portable UHF kit

Hi all I hope the picture comes out ok . I decided to buy a twin pack Uniden portable UHF after a caravanning friend said he used and liked the portability. Anyway I will find out soon enough if they were a good choice. $299.00 at Dick Smiths with an added 1 year warranty so 3 years in total. Recommended channels please for - Listening in to truckies / road trains

Other Vanners Emergency

Well done Rooster, they do have a shorter distance coverage being a hand held though.

Now, if you do a search in Techies there was a list of all the frequencies used bu UHF. If that fails ask Mr Google.

Just to get you going with the important ones though.......

.....5&35 are for emergency calls, move to another channel when contact made and asked to move.

9 is a general call channel, then move to another.

18 is for caravaners, then move to another channel.

40 is the general truckies channel but 29 for some reason is used on the Pacific Hwy NSW, again, move to another chennel if
chatting for any length of time.

I have these all set in my scan mode and also scan 22, 25 and 35. You will find a lot of road works on 22&25.

Have fun good buddy.

Edit...Ooops, forgot to say, please keep 5&35 free of general chit chat and for emergencies only, one day you might need it free. There are a lot of idiots that chat on it but even worse, companies using it for business.

You will notice when in Cities and large towns there are a lot of idiots on UHF in general and will learn all about body parts etc. Do what I do and turn right down or OFF.

Rodger that.

Hi Doug

Many thanks for this - I will see if I can program in these channels for general scanning only and write that in a visible place until I memorise.

Yes another friend did say I would have limited range , however I thought as a good starting point and just local " noise" might be helpful.

I guess not sure yet how useful will be overall.

Not a lot of interest in using inside city areas - hopefully will catch up on the road one day :)

Cheers Mike

PS - Can you plug into an externally mounted aerial to increase range ? could be someone has thought of this maybe - would be a great add on

You can but a antenna for it that gives you about a gain 3db

Usually 3db  doubles the output and in the input tis a worthwhile

Option but tis all theory  but it does boost the signal
