Ipad air gps systems??

I have an Ipad air with cellular. How do I get it to use the GPS satellite system rather than the phone tower triangulation system?

As far I can remember you have to disconnect the Wifi connection if you want to use the GPS. If you google Ipad Air Gps you should get the right info. Anytime I have a issue I just google it.

Hi Paul, yeah disconnect the wifi and the hotspot. GPS will kick in as soon as you boot wiki or any other app that needs location. Hope you are well mate

cheers

That's a bit stupid of Apple... I have a Windows phone and a Windows Surface Pro tablet and if you have GPS, it gets used whether wifi is on or not. I used to use Android stuff and it's the same. No idea why crapple would do that... doesn't make any sense to me... good to know though.

My iPad Air is wifi only and it works with wiki without turning the wifi off.

When I  go into wiki camps and use it as a GPS it is the same as using my Tom Tom it tells you where to turn and the name of the street you have to turn at.

I use an iPad and iPhone with some mapping apps.

Just turn the GPS on and it will use that, moving map and all.

Don't need to turn anything off.

OK, I don't own any I things, but I was under the impression that the Ipad Air with wifi only doesn't have a GPS because the GPS chip is part of the G3 module, and uses the same antenna. So, without a GPS chip you will only get location information via wifi, which will only work if you are connected to a wifi network.

Is this the case, or do the wifi only models also have a GPS chip?

My Android tablet (Asus Transformer 101) does have a GPS chip, so you do get location directly from GPS satellites.

Correction from what I told you before 03Troopy,I tested mine today ,you must have WIFI to set the GPS in motion, first up a ladies voice tells you what direction to start at then there is a map of your route hi lighted in blue just follow the map to your destination, but you need WIFI to set up first ,then it works without the WIFI, I tried setting up at the opposite end to come home no WIFI wouldn't set up for me .hope you can make sense of my jumble.

Looking at the specs, wifi only doesn't have GPS, so any turn by turn direction you have will only be available when connected to a wifi network, unless it is giving an approximation derrived from it's 3 axis gyro, accelerometer, and digital compass all combined.

Location

  • Wi-Fi only

  • Wi-Fi
  • Digital compass
  • Wi-Fi + Cellular

    Wi-Fi
  • Digital compass
  • Assisted GPS and GLONASS
  • Cellular

Thanks everyone, I have learnt a lot about my Ipad air with cellular over the last couple of days. My cousin KJB told me about a gps system that he used in Europe and in the US I think. I downloaded the 7 day free trial to test it while away this week.

Got to Yarrawonga mid arvo today after spending last night at the Longwood recreation reserve, approx. 17km south west of Euroa.
