We recently stayed one night Fitzroy River Lodge Caravan Park. A Beautiful park and surrounding but for the first time in 10 weeks on the road we had our bicycles stolen from under our annexe. We were not the only campers targetted as plastic containers were strewn all over the park roads from other campers and we were not the only ones who filed a report at the police station.
Happily the police did a fantastic job and recovered our bicycles (with only a flat tyre) and the offenders have been charged.
Konunnura Couriers have arranged for the bikes to be transported by Greyhound bus to join us at Konunnura.
A timely reminder for everyone, doesn't matter what star rating your caravan park has or how well lit it is, thieves will take every opportunity left for them. Unfortunately for us our bicycles can not go on the bike rack during the night as it is attached to the extending Bedroom and we were advised not to use the extension while the Bikes are on.
Would love to see a forum where we can highlight places that are particularly notorious for theft. We decided to avoid Halls Creek altogther and opted to Free camp 50k out of town where we actually felt safer
We have been told several times since that Fitroy Crossing in well known for theft, wished we had known sooner
Sorry to hear of your upset. Glade you got your bikes back.
You could buy from a bunnings store a plastic coated s/ steel cable to loop through the frames and around your bumper bar. Normally just linking them together is enough to deter low lives .
Looks odd when you see idoits trying to move two bikes tried together.
I got same type of cables made to length to go through all my Gerry cans, gas bottle etc for our camper, here in Sydney at Silverwater. They make all safty gear for work sites and heavy lifting cables and chains etc @ $22.00 each, for 5mtr 6mm cables with 10 ton crimps on each end.
Since the advent of battery powered angle grinders along with the wafer thin cutting wheels, nothing is safe when chain or even armour plated cable are used. The only restriction is noise but if you are away from the rig you will never know. If at all possible tell whoever is camped around you that you are going away, then hope that they don't have a battery powered angle grinder !! My son calls them his remote spanner !cheers
Hi Abby,
Ken Tame Insurance from memory has a $1000 cover for $10 a year for our ebike, we lock the ebike up on the bike rack at night along with my treadly, with a bike lock and ones of those alarm locks, that if you cut the wire the alarm goes off.
During the day if not in use the ebike is alarm locked to a vehicle wheel.
This is what I use for locking my kayak to the van A frame of a night, the cable is stainless steel if removed or cut in half the alarm goes off, it has 2plus mtrs of cable and the alarm is 120 DECIBEL very loud.
Ooh, I like that Lance. where did you obtain that please?

If it went off during the night the noise of it would proberly wake half the park or where ever you are, I suppose that way they could help you catch the culprit may be.
That's the unit ( above) I have, on the net I think they are $38 delivered, saw one at the last Adelaide Caravan and Camping show mentioned the net price and the Sale guy sold me my unit for $35.
Easy to use as well. With my unit the sound starts off fairly low and builds up.

Hi BillM,
Now the world knows ( Joke) I carry one in my Kit. Not used as yet. Many years back, had to use an angle grinder to remove a frozen U bolts via extra long extension cords in Cobar NSW. One day I hope to free a little old senior from a wheel clamp lol. You can only do so much.

I keep everything locked down. My ladder (so I can clean my solar panels) is on the rear bumper and locked with plastic coated cable. Both diesel tanks for ute padlocked. Tow ball locked always in when not on car. Both 9kg gas tanks has similar lock cable as my ladder. Lock my spare 9kg gas tank, metal table and Webber with light chain and padlock when out of 'van or ute. The only thing I cant really lock down are the two deck chairs.
Northern WA and NT are the worst areas for this type of theft.
Recently one of our friends free camped about 40 km out of Alice Springs - there were 7 other RV's there. One later caught up and told them that they and another RV were still there about 10am when a bunch of locals turned up and demanded money, smokes or alcohol. When refused, they were threatened with violence, so both lots got into their RV's. These mongrels then got on one side of each van and started rocking them sidewards demanding the goodies until the police eventually turned up after 000 calls. Be careful where you free camp in these areas and remember theres safety in numbers.
