Driving tent pegs

smile To the person wanting to put tent pegs in using coach screws. Forget about cordless drills ,what about a good old speed brace with a 1/2 inch socket . Easier to store away & less expensive. You have probably got one already.

Graeme, that is an auger bit, got 3 in the shed. I would be impossible to screw in a coach screw with one.

Crusaderhilton, insert a photo.

Elliemike that's what I would use ,if you read the post about coach screws used to secure awnings someone suggested a cordless drill ,this way it packs away easy ,does not cost much ,just buy the rite socket to fit head of screw.

Has anybody tried putting the screws in with either a brace and bit or the speed brace? Would like to hear how much effort is required.

I have been using a cordless drill for nearly two years and eight camping trips. I just make sure that both battery packs are charged before we set off and even charging one up the night before we travel.

I recently bought a 240V rattle gun and while I have only tried it out in our front yard it drives in a 300mm screw down in a blink of an eye. (Our next trip is in June so I'll give it a full try out then.)

I'm with you on that one, use the technology not your muscles.

had more than enough time with a brace and bit as an apprentice thanks anyway.

cruisaderhilton I am probably one of those you are referring to. Unfortunately it is thru necessity not laziness that I need to use a drill over any manual method. My hubby has lung cancer and I have arthritis in my hands so he is unable to swing a hammer or put any weight behind manually winding anything ( putting in is not so much of a prob as I can swing the hammer but pulling out of hard ground is a major effort ) I am so into using the cordless drill I can now adjust the jockey wheel and lower/raise the legs without hubbies assistance cos they are all operated by the drill.

Yes I use a cordless for everything, we have a Bos jockey unit, just have to change the sockets for driving the stabiliser legs and the Coach screws, even the boss can use it all, as she had to the other day as I had a shoulder operation. If we had to use brace or hammer we would have been stuck or at least would have had to ask someone else to help pack up.

I can use the corner steady brace as an emergency Coach Screw(Bolt) driver.  Long enough so I don't even have to bend down to do the job & the same (nut) size too.

I have been using battery drill for a few years and I am now looking at replacing it with a battery powered rattle gun any advice on a reasonably priced decent quality one would be much appreciated.

I have ground the flat cutting edge off the auger .. They screw in like a cork screw in the right soil..
I have made some good strong pegs out of 4mm steel welded together..
I'm old enough to have drilled 1000's of power poles with hand auger ! Yes iron bark boring is hard work...
Also have coach bolt welded on bolt as extension ..
Carry my AEG battery drill set and Kinchrome socket set .. The axe / hammer combination gets a workout also.
The axe side come in handy pulling then OUT !!
Have a few options for sand of clay / rock soils ...
We often go to drags in pits .. We use long roofing screws through the road base ...
Just unscrew with battery drill and hammer small hole .. No damage ...
