Welcome to the gang Michelle, enjoy here and out in the playground.

From what I have heard you could expect to clock up roughly 20,000km so that's a starting point for cost of fuel. I could be wrong but maybe average that cost out to about $1.90lt for Diesel maybe. Then food, touristy things, vehicle maintenance etc etc etc. Everyone would be different I reckon.

I'm sure someone here has been there done that and might give a more accurate figure for you.

Maybe just get out there and enjoy it.

friends of ours called through Brissie on the last leg of their round Australia trip ( Townsville being there start-stop point). It has taken them 14 months to do this trip and they were telling us they budgeted $350 per week for diesel & accom, they used free camps as much as possible. They were in a Landcruiser towing a 22' van.

Well we budgeted $500 per week previously when on the road full time,,, now we allow $600 per week and limit distance generally to 300km max per day and free camp often.

How to save if travelling distances - spend a major portion on fuel and free camp.

If in CP - save on fuel spend on accommodation etc.

Food reasonably constant - depends on how many bakeries we come across,,lol.

So distance and CP accom can be interchangeable cost wise ie a trade off.

If saving funds lay up in free camp for 2 weeks = no fuel or accom costs.

Cheers Baz

Hi Michelle,

All the above comments have merit. If you know your fuel economy of your rig, then using Dougwe's calculation you can work out what your total fuel bill will set you back.

I am looking at doing up to a 25,000 km trip (adding in all the dog-leg trips) and using $1.90 as an average, you could allow $6,840 for 20k and up to $8550 for 25k. (dependant on your own economy)

Additional costs of at least a couple of services along the way and allow for some impromptu maintenance. (That idler bearing on the air con will always go in a town that doesn't have a spare)

cheers Techno.

Hi Michelle, on my last trip around the block (2010) a short cut from Brissy to Alice via Tibooburra (lots of mud) then up the Tanami Track (so using a little more EXPENSIVE fuel in those places) 22000 km it cost me $5500-$6000 for fuel thats with a lot of side trips into National Parks, a lot of free camping so Caravan Pks only cost about $1000.
