RE: Screw in Tent Pegs

Hi Hako,

The photo for the pack of pegs for sale this coming weekend in Aldi's on-line catalogue show that they are standard straight ones - that is, not threaded like in the photo posted by 03 Troopy. I presume that all Aldis will have the same pegs.

I'll still have a look at them on the weekend.

G'Day Murray,

The Aldi advert shows 3 different types available - "premium" "Hard ground" or "pile driver" and if you check out the 2nd picture in 03Troopy's post you will see it shows threaded ones called "pile drivers" so I'd say they are the threaded ones in the latest flyer.

EDIT....just checked the part number of the ones in the flyer - 44661 same as 03Troop's plus look closely at the orange ones in the flyer as it shows threaded pegs.

Regards

Photo from the catalogue - if you open up on each case it tells you which are which.

Psst  ...  Don't tell every one.  There'll be none left for me at any of the 5 local Aldis.  (Springwood, Underwood, Garden City, Sunnybank, Calamvale or Coopers Plains).  Hang on, that's 6!

Still waiting for Aldi to open in South Australia, we often see camping products advertised and wish we could buy them.furious

Malurus , have you ever looked at buying online through ALDI when they have specials....I don't know what there online policy is for areas that don't have stores but may be worth a try as they do have some great camping specials at times

Thanks for that information I didn't realise they had an online service.

I don't think ALDI sell online - just have an online brochure of specials and you must shop at the store. I checked their site and it says nothing about buying online.

Just bought me a set of the pile drivers from ALDI this morning and they are a bit of a disappointment - the threaded bit is not like that of a wood/coach screw....more fluted and when I tried to screw them in the ground it was more me forcing them forward than the screw doing the job. Other thing is the plastic bit near the head spins with the screw as it's fixed and can catch on anything nearby. They appear to be designed to be driven in with a hammer - there is no mention of 'screwing' them in.
Bottom line is coach screws with washers under the head might be better. Now I have 20 more pegs which as usual "will come in handy".

Good Luck.

I also have brought the ALDI screws and just did a test run a bit disappointing they screw in easy and pull out easy don't need the driver to get them out hand job no problem , No sure hoe they would take a blow , I always have trouble pulling out the pegs I hammer in.

It could be that they come to their fore in dry gravelly compacted dirt. They certainly have changed the design to those that 03Troopy bought from ALDI - his are more like coach screws.
I can vaguely remember similar screws for Super Six corrugated fibro panels and also some made of aluminium for those aluminium roofing panels that were the rage in the late 60's before cyclone Althea stripped them all in'73.

I'm battling to work out why this topic has run to 3 separate threads, how much is there to know about the subject.

As for carrying an 12 volt drill and chargerconfuse just another degree of complexity and more weight, I've been camping for 60 odd years, sturdy steel pegs and a hammer still get the job done for me with a minimum of fuss.wink

It's all a done deal for me ..

I took the Aldi ones back & fitted the 200mm 12 gauge galv Hex Head Coach Screws with 12mm washers held in place with 10mm washers forced on.  I put galv tags on each guy rope spring drilled with 13mm holes for the screws.

I always carry a batt drill & 3/4 socket extension so it's no extra hassle & much easier to remove the pegs from hard ground.

image.jpegThis is short screw in peg I make up . I try to find a bigger bolt on the top for better support .. Fits on elect drill easy . In clay or stony ground ? It way long enough . I use a truckies hitch to tension also so I tie things down hard ..
