Gough Whitlams State Memorial Service

I am watching the fantastic ABC coverage of the Gough Whitlams State Memorial Service. Although it was sad to see booing some of the politicians from both sides as they entered...

Some excellent speakers..Also some magnificent music. The didgeridoo player is so talented...

Politics aside, people who are so uncouth and ill bred as to boo as such a service are just disgusting.  I hate to think of them as our future.

Disgraceful behaviour that is so often cheered on by media that are more interested in making 'news' that is controversial and can sell their fish wrappers. Now a State funeral sets the scene and presents fodder for cheap and nasty talk shows led by disrespectful Bogans, both male and female.

This would be a historical photo of so many ex PM's with the current PM.

I couldn't help think of all the taxpayers money it's taking for their pensions and perks in retirement though.

Just think we have seven ex PM's we are paying big bucks for while the ADF get offered a 1% pay increase for three years while the cost of living is running at 2.5%.

As for Gough we must be in the early stage of dementia if we recall Gough as anything other than the designer of the 18=22 % home interest rates and a PM who didn't even trust those elected with him to take up position in the cabinet, recall he and Jim Cains ran all the portfolios for a few months Then we have Keating and Hawke as follow ups with an endless bankcard mentality . No thanks Gough did not for me or any others in the ADF at the time apart from downgrade the service to a Dads Army

The political game is so lame - both major parties are just as bad as one another, and the minor parties no better - some do a few good things but stuff the rest of the things up. They all have grand visions, but few can attain them !

BUT, what I do know is that in my working lifetime (as a consulting engineer) that I was only unemployed long term (meaning more than three months) twice, once under Goof (and I had a 15% mortgage to service) and once under Hawke/Keating (thankfully the mortgage was paid out by then) - just as well I retired before Rudd/Gillard delivered me a neat hat-trick !

Oh well ! I'm in the winter of my life, only got to put up with these idiots for maybe another 10 - 20 years or so, then I won't need to worry about them, I'll be eternally caravanning !

It wasn't Jim Cairns it was Lance Barnard and the decision was made because of the delays involved in nominating and swearing in a full cabinet and it only lasted for 16 days anyway not even a month. Inflation was already rising before the 1972 election and every Western nations suffered under the oil crisis at the time. If you want to introduce politics into the discussion at least get your facts right.

Thinking about the photo, there are some uncomfortable distances there. On both sides too (is that so, Big Mal?)biggrin

Odds on Julia though if she and Kev707 were matched in the MMA Octogon later.  Her tongue is one 'sharp' that the refs cannot remove prior to the event.
