I had a call today, the caller asked for me by name, but I couldn't hear what they said after that. Thinking it was one of "those" calls I asked who was calling, again couldn't hear what they said. Told them I couldn't hear them properly and they repeated themselves, but I heard enough to realise it was a genuine call and it was my local hearing clinic and they were telling me my new hearing aid was ready (I had handed my old ones into the clinic for recycling to third world countries).
After apologising for not being able to hear her properly the girl on the other end said that's ok we get that all the time from our clients.
Hmmmm.......I definitely need those new hearing aids after all, the girl's reply cracked me up when I thought about it and her comments on those they ring.

What is the position held by the authorities in regard to recycling hearing aids in this country? I realise there would be hygiene concerns, but surely the government sponsored aids should be reused, if at all feasible. A new mould for an in-ear aid only costs $100, or at least that's what my mother paid for hers.

Vic, do you realise the sales people for hearing aids always speak in whispers until you have the aids fitted??? Then they speak normally.

Dorian, I am not sure what the procedure is they did tell me they give them a good clean etc before they pass them on to wherever.
My new ones are BTE (Behind the ear) and are free to pensioners, the audiologist claimed the BTE ones perform better than the in the ear ones, although it may be they are only trying to get rid of older stock, who knows????
Where my brother's wife goes for her hearing aids and attention they have a sign that they donate 'unwanted' (old) hearing aids to some mob in Sydney who clean and check them and they are sent to Asia to assist those who cannot afford hearing aids.
I have seen the same sign and info in optomertrists regarding spectacles as well - donated and sent to Asia for those who cannot afford.

Just picked up the new hearing aids (behind the ear -free to those on a pension) they are "wireless" in as much as when you adjust one it "talks" to the other one and adjusts both at the same time. It has a voice over which tells you verbally when you need new batteries/an or they need cleaning or what setting you have chosen (out of three options when in use).
They told me they cost the government $4,000 so not a cheap item.
When you pee it sounds like Niagra Falls, even typing sounds like a stampede of cattle, some sounds/tapping etc sound very clicky, go back in a fortnight to have them adjusted (free). They have a $49 plan you can buy which covers batteries, repairs, insurance etc per annum if you want it. I have until my next appointment to decided if I want this and whether I think it is worth it.
Vic - I have similar units - be aware the plan for batteries, repairs etc may not cover insurance if you lose one which isn't too hard if you wear specs. My plan with Australian Hearing does not cover for loss insurance which I had to add to our house insurance ($16 p.a.)
