Silly Question

I feel silly asking this but.. thought i would as i haven't found a thread on it.

I noticed most people are on FB or have Facebook these days.

And am wondering if people are happy to add members to get to know them better?

I'm happy to but being new i can understand some people might not feel comfortable doing so.

Anyway here is my link if i'm allowed to share and hope to get to know you guys more

I often receive invitations to join various Social networks. . However Ive made it a policy not to join any social online sites, e.g. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or any others. I believe that people put too much of their personal information online, and thats not for me !! This can result in identity fraud amongst other risks.

I also make a point of replying to these invitations, explaining my position, because they come from good friends and relatives, and I dont want to offend anyone by not accepting.

I do actually have a Facebook account because I joined up when it first started, just to see what it was all about. However Ive never made any entries or have I made any Friends.

I'm sure there are Facebook members on the Forum who will be happy to link up with you.

I'm with you BG and Dave. Joined FB ages ago and haven't bothered with it since. Ditto Twitter. I hear a lot on the news about social media and how ANTI social it's becoming. I can do without that.

Like those above I do not use facebook or any other social media, not many in my age group do i believe, probably due to our upbringing. Especially those of us from European backgrounds. Trusting someone else with our personal info is something that is not easily achieved for us.

Facebook  is great but I don't see any reason to part with personal information. I keep in touch with so many people that I wouldn't email through FB. I know what is happening with Fires, SES, accidents, roads and would be lost without it.

Each to their own but it is up to you how much info you part with.

Hi Maxime     I am on FB and thoroughly enjoy it.  You can join the Grey Nomads site or Oz Nomads or any of the other sites out there.  You get heaps of info this way

Enjoy  Maz

We use the GN site and Facebook, we value the friends and relationships that we made on the GN forum, but face book is for more personal friends. We are Facebook friends with some we have met on the road, some GN,s and some not, but I think it has to be after a meeting and a happy hour or two to establish a deeper acquaintance. Our family is on Facebook not just friends. Hope these ramblings make sense.

I have introduced a number of grey people to Facebook who had the same concerns as list above. once they work out how it all works they never look back. Facebook used for good is great to keep in touch with the world. The days of forums such as this are limited I am afraid.

Sorry Grahamg, I can't agree, there will always be a place for specialised forums such as this in social media. The specific interest groups need to be catered for.

I enjoy keeping in touch with family and friends on FB. I just don't over do it. The old saying, "moderation in everything". I must get back to updating our blog. Been too busy this last year!!! biggrin

Not a silly question at all I am on FB mainly for family reasons I am in Queensland and most of the family are in Victoria I have deleted a lot of Acquaintances as I am on on it to keep in touch with family.

Suggestion to to those who joined Facebook and have never really used it for privacy reasons and don't want to, your info is still there.

To deactivate your account, Logon to your Facebook account and deactivate it.

Got to Settings:> Which is a little dark blue drop down arrow on the left hand side of the blue bar along the top.  Then click on security Then click on Deactivate your account (which is at the bottom of your security settings in Blue)

If you do cancel your Facebook account you have got to stay away from your account for 2 weeks if you go into your account during this 2 week period it reactivates the account.

I had a FB account but found it a pain as always receiving messages that were usually irrelevant and just a waste of time.

Facebook sooo yesterday as your grandkids will probably tell you.

Cheers

David

Glenelg i'm happy to pm you instructions how to remove the email notifications it's very straight forward. One thing i am is PC savvy and instruction manuals i use to write all the time for first timers. If you need help I'm more than happy to help!

WOW What a diverse response I find it amusing how different people like different things. I personally love FB.. Didn't either in the beginning either, (hate Twitter) but find i can keep in touch with family and friends i cannot see often (who might live on the other side of the world) Have to say have made many awesome friends over the time and yes just like other social places you can get rubbish attitudes too but i tend to steer clear of those, life is too short to be miserable and negative i guess.

As for Personal information.. YES i agree and FB and other social places are forcing you to give information... but it's a choice.. you don't' have to i guess... I've worked for the Government and the jobs i did I am not allowed to be mentioned anywhere.. so i tend to not provide any information that can get me into trouble.

Thank you for your replies. You're more than welcome to add me for the people who do.... i'm no stalker i promise lol, Just let me know your user names please too when you do I do tend to gauge who's on my fb as we all know you have trouble makers in this world to

BTW thank you Maz for mentioning the other forum i didnt know about that place either might join up there too

LOL @ Cloak

Gee Maxx, my face is ugly enough without putting in a book.

As for Twitter, I'm a big enough twit without going on twitter.

I waited befor you got heaps of responses before I commented as wombat would accuse  me of going "off topic" and I don't do that.

I love Facebook for many varied reasons however i never put my real birth date or my address. They do not need to know and my family know when my birthday is. As well as friends, I am a member of a number of groups including caravanning groups which share info just like this forum. Turn off notifications and just check in when you feel like it. No probs.
