Setting Up A Rear Camera

Many people have a camera fitted on the back of their van, some regard them as a useful rear view device, a supplement to the mirrors, others regard them as just a reversing tool.

When our van was delivered, the camera was adjusted to look down, it was perfect for reversing, giving a good close in view with most of the back of the van in the picture, but I could only see a few meters behind the van.

We then adjusted the camera up, so that the horizon appeared at the top of the screen. In doing this I could still see the ground behind the van, but we could not see any of the van, thus we had no reference when reversing, but we had a really good rear view.

To give a reference when reversing, we set out four witches hats in line with the sides of the van behind the van, we then marked these on a clear plastic mask clipped to the front of the screen, we then joined the dots on each side, giving us a pair of reference lines for use when reversing.

By doing this we now have a camera that gives us a good rear view, and is also a good tool for reversing as well.

David I read somewhere on the forum that someone had two cameras on the back of the van, one set so you could see the for reversing and one for see further behind so you could see the traffic etc. They also had one on the tug looking down to hitch up. You just change the view on the screen to suite. Sounds a good way of doing it. Yours is cheaper though.

Doug, the screen I have has the ability to select between two sources (cameras), I would assume this would be one on the back of the caravan, the other on the back of the tow vehicle.

What I have done works well for me, and does not require wiring to support another camera.

They are hard wired, it is a system supplied by Safety Dave, as per the link, but with only one camera (my tug already has a built in camera).

Plendo,
Having reference lines on the reversing monitor is a good tip, thanks.
It seems more difficult and expensive to buy a reversing camera kit when the tow vehicle (Land Cruiser VX in our case) already has it's own reversing camera.

The dual cameras would be an excellent option for people setting up a new camera from scratch.

The one on the back of my tug has as well, and I found them useful, that is why i worked out a way to do the same thing with the one on the back of the van.
