I would like to get anyones thoughts on motorholmes. I am leaning towards an Avan Ovation m3 lowline and would like to know if anyone out there has one or had experience with one. I will be travelling solo and my plan is to be on the road for several years to see all I can. Any advice greatly appreciate.
Julie
Just be aware that the A'van motorhome conversions are built on a light chassis, thus have a limited towing ability, which may or may not be an issue for you. Fit out wise, they are on par with Jayco. We have an old A'van Campervan, which has served us well for many years.
Using the search function on the dark blue line above came up with this thread Julie, also a couple of others in the search results too (just click on Search and type in motorhomes, it will bring up past threads etc). See;
Hi Julie. We loved our A'van Applause. It was the 600 model with a 3 litre semi automated manual box. I always drove it in automatic mode. Its a van conversion although 6 metre long it did fit in a normal parking bay. We sold it because we wanted something with the ability to go off road.

Hello Julie B - sorry I don't have ideas on MHs but I have a question for Bryan - when you say you wanted to go off road - did you mean 'fair dinkum' off road trips or just on gravel roads? What did you end up buying? Surely MHs in general should go on gravel roads I would have thought. Your A-van looked like a good MH anyway Bryan.
Hi Nelly, fair dinkum off road to get to some tight fishing spots because I'm a fishing tragic but not the "fully loaded man" type of off roading just for the sake of it. I was going to settle for a Vista RV XL but Kathy wanted a little more comfort hence the Goldstream.
I found the A'van really comfortable and just big enough for two of us to go away for a couple of weeks or so. Packing up to go touring for the day or just to the nearest town for breakfast was not an issue, just wind the awning in, fold up 2 chairs and a table and off you go. In my caravan, I would do the same before going off exploring in the car. What worried me most about a MH was if something went wrong with the motor, I would be without a "home" and vice versa. For that reason, I will change to a Travelhome 26' fifth wheeler instead of another MH when I retire and get on the road full time.
In the end its what suits you. The advice I was given a long while ago is rent different RV's and get a feel of them to help you work out your individual preferences.
Hi Julie I have an Avan M3 lowline & love it. I travel by myself with my little dog. I have recently returned from an 8 week trip Sydney to South Australia. I found it easy to drive, very comfortable and had no issues at all. The 3lit diesel auto with cruise control was great and economical (after talking with other motorhome owners). Very easy to set up & heaps of storage. Can not wait till I hit the road again. Val
Well I think I have sort of gone the hole range of the different methods of camping..
- I owned a Camper trailer for several years and used it in all types of weather and times of the year..
As a solo camper I will say it's not the easiest thing to setup and pull down and fold away..
- I owned a XF Panel van which I spent at least 5years + camping from out the back.. At the time I was regular camping above the snowline and one year I spent over 70days at different Mountain's.. either Falls or Hotham.. and the longest period was 16days..
- I toured America in a small "B" Class.. A converted Ford Ecovan.. it had a Bed, a fridge and storage.. I spent 3months on the road and only ever spent 9days/nights in RV camps and the rest of the time I was free camping.. In either National Parks, in the country side or just hidden off the road..
- I know own a Toyota Coaster bus that is about 2/3 of the way thru a conversion..
It has all the needed stuff and by the time I'm finished it will have the LOT..
--> full 240v appliances [Fridge, cooking, Cooling/heating] the entertainment stuff..
With no need to plug into a Power Point..
Glamping in miniature..
So all I can say is the choice is yours, you need to work out the minimum that you want to have... so what I'm saying is IT's all your choice...

When we were looking I asked quite a few owners of various makes their opinion of their rigs. Nearly all A Van owners were disappointed and couldn't wait to sell. Problems all round.
Julie. We have a Jayco Conquest. It has been agreatmotorhome. Jayco do a good job of living up to their warranty these days. This is our third Jayco. It hasdone everything that we have required of it and the gear,(water pumps, heaters etc) havebeen easyto get to when needed. Good luck with whateveryou buy.
