I arrived here yesterday after the 130km trip from Longreach, you have to book in at the Council Chambers and the fees are very reasonable. $3 per day or $15 for the week. So what do you get for that princely sum, heaps, for one thing you get to be able to camp at either site the Barcoo River Nature Park Camps6 #687 or Oma Waterhole some 12 kms away. There are toilets and hot showers behind the Council Chambers and flushing toilets at the camp site with power sockets, a dump site and treated water on tap. Lots of room for the biggest rig and parking right on the river bank, the town is a few minutes walk away and overall I am impressed with the campsite.

Just at the moment what is lacking for me is friendly neighbours, I have met and spent time with my nearest campers but so far no spark that suggests friendship although we have had long talks. Today I walked up to the town and bought the honey that I had forgotten in Longreach and paid $7.30 for a small jar. Got out the choofer tonight and cooked stirfry followed by jaffles and used the billy to heat up water for the coffee, I know I will have to come to terms with buying tea and drinking Billy Tea.

Got out the fishing rod and set up but with no success, the problem can't be my fault it was the bait that wouldn't stick to the hook. All I had was minced sausage meat that I had forgotten about and discovered in the freezer, anyway the local pelicans got the rest of it thrown in front of their beaks. I am sure that if I had caught a fish the pelicans would have got it before I did. There is always another day now that I have got all the fishing gear out from under the bed.

Sounds like a marvelous camp spot.

Did you have fishing gear in the camper John, or is this an added extra now you have more space.

Maybe the bait wasn't fancy enough...maybe they've been spoilt all winter with so many GN fishing !!!

Yes Robyn I have had the fishing gear from the beginning working on the premis that I couldn't afford the space for golf clubs and I couldn't eat golf balls but hopefully I could fit in fishing gear and maybe catch a fish or two for meals. In almost 3 years I have eaten 3  fish that I actually caught.

Oh dear the fishing gear could end up being an expensive investment.

One fish per year.....hmmmmm not a good start.

Well it's supposed to be relaxing, passing the days away. Might be irksome never catching much, I was thinking I might be able to learn to fish maybe not a fruitful hobby.

Showers and loos, power points and camping by the river. Sounds like my kinda spot for $15 a week! As to fishing, I reckon an inner tube and a strap-on Pelican beak might be the go. No bait needed.

 I spent $300 on fishing gear and only caught 3 fish. That works out at $100 per fish.  Geez I'm please I didn't catch any more.

Sunday morning and I followed the walking track or I thought that I did but on returning after a long round trip going round the golf course (I say that loosely it is a flat dry open area with black scrapes for greens) but when I got back I saw a sign pointing to the walking track and I must have missed where it departed from my track.

Not to worry I had carried a back pack with clean clothes and toiletries ready for a shower. How good is it to have a shower without worrying that either the water or the electricity may run out. So back to the camp and ready for whatever comes my way, my neighbours have moved on to Oma Waterhole. I have heard that the road is unmade and corrugated and the sites are hilly, it may have held the recent fishing competition and the river flows well there but I will give it a miss.

No choofer tonight remembered my old favourite, chicken tonight with chicken noodles, still in the fridge from Longreach. I did throw in a line again to no avail but have left one in overnight. New neighbours but both are moving on tomorrow.   John

I seem to catch fish everywhere I go, but that could be because I pratice a lot(I run a fishing charter on Magnetic Island).You've gotto be patient, and persevere. Billsmile[1].gifPhoto227.jpg

me thinks you are just showing off Bill LOL.
You should leave some fish for us poor buggers travelling around try to get a feed.
I did catch some nice salmon and leather jackets last weekend near Wallaroo so at least I have had a feed in the last month but poor John is probably really hanging out for some nice fresh fish.
He is in your state you should find him and give him some lessons.
I leave SA soon so perhaps back to Victoria and get back to the Murray and the Gun Bower rivers for some real fishing and some relaxing. Also looking to go to Fitzroy River Crossing and do some surf fishing so you never know what will happen.

Your Atlantic Salmon looks strangely like a Carp?I don,t mean to keep "karping" on,but maybe you should get a fish id book.Carp are good for the old "carp and stone"recipe.You throw the carp and the stone on the fire and cook til the stone gets soft , you eat the stone ,and throw the carp away.........Bill

Billy boy,?????  !!Carp!!,??,,, May I be so bold as to say, !!if, and I say only, if it is Carp, then its one of the nicest fish I have ever eaten,  !!And may I say this , in its defence, the Whole of  Europe eats Carp. and to end ,noooooo its not muddy, and it is has nooooo more bones in it, than , say flat head,,, Stay excited Nomads,,, remember, we are not guaranteed tomorrow,,, enjoy !!Now,!!             Billeeeeee...........

That looks Luke the same one I caught at Greens Billeeee. A lot of people caught that fish. I had no problem eating the carp we caught there, not bad at all.

 I thought that was recipe for Galah.

Just remember, European Carp are a noxious fish and should never be returned to the water, unless the rules have changed.

I suppose when you have more palatable fish(or galahs), to eat , Carp don,t appeal.I would like to see, and try a carp recipe that works as they have tasted like boiled mud to me.Luckily, there's  not a lot of carp on Magnetic island.Good fun catching them. Landed one 8.5 kgs in the murray, while fishing for cod , a couple of years ago.They make good fertilizer........Bill

Thought I might add a few verses as well
