Tully Showgrounds

I have found a showground (Tully) that doesn't charge to camp overnight, call into the information office to request a free stopover and a paper authority will be issued for up to 2 days. There are limited places available all near the big Cassowary. Water is available and just by the gate there is a toilet and in the handicapped section is a cold shower.

Only in the places allocated are you able to camp and some take advantage of the generosity and camp on the grass by the creek, I was told that if this continues the showgrounds will not be available for camping so I went round and mentioned that to a couple camped there with no visible result. I suppose they thought that they wouldn't be coming through later so didn't care, I hope that they get moved on later. I found this place from WikiCamps as well as word of mouth from campers at Rollingstone.

Been invited for happy hour later from those camped officially so will see how that turns out.   John

Thanks for that info John, hard to believe they do not charge to stop over there. As show grounds in some aras we have found during this trip are almost as dear as a caravan park with less facilities.

And yes you are so right in what you said about the people camped in the no camping area, these type are the reason these types of places are closing. The attitude we got when we mentioned to a three up tag along motor home group that the area they were in was out of bounds to camping

their answer was ..well we wont be back this way so who carers !!! My mate said back we a lot of b....y people carer, you may not be back this way but if people abuse the rules where you are heading my be closed for the very same reason from what you are doing.

Um they packed up and left...So we ended up have the place to our self.

Further to yeoeleven's info, the dump point is adjacent to the western gate, outside the fence, just down from the main entrance.  Used it last month but had to supply my own water hose for washing down.

Heard Macca talking to the guy who Sculpted the Cassowary with a Chainsaw on Sunday, on "Australia all Over".  ABC, as you probably all know.  Was tough to do apparently.  I think he said Yasi took the top of the tree out, and the council asked him to do something with the stump that was left.  I think the result is great.

Cheers,

Sheba.

At last the council has been listening to common sense and opened up the Showgrounds.
Tully has been finding it hard since Cyclone Yasi and this is a positive move to bring tourists into the town.
To anyone staying here, thank you and if you need any info on places to visit or even a helping hand please feel free to pm me.

Cheers
Sol

Wish I had of known of this site as not only would it have been a free night but turning into Tully off the Highway would have saved me getting a speeding ticket for driving at 77KPH in what I thought was an 80 zone also didn't know about the speeding ticket till I got home 3 months later and that's another whole nightmare story.
