Beware!

To the RACV and maybe to the NRMA??

I would like to report an incident on Friday 12th October in Moree.  I have a Toyota coaster Registration JS 2526, for which I pay Total Care with the RACV.  I was 20 km. .kilometres north of Moree and I had a serious oil leak from somewhere, as oil was dropping onto the road and being flung up by my tyres all over the back of my Coaster right up to the roof.  I had spare oil with me, and instead of calling the RACV (NRMA) I decided to save them the trouble of coming out on the highway to assist me and drove to the NRMA depot in Moree.

I was told by an employee there,( Doug and another Chap Who had a quick look underneath  and declared it  too be probably a Main oil. Seal., . And that the clutch and.Gear box may have to be pulled down and would cost around $1800.  I decided to continue on my way on the Newell Highway filling up the oil as needed.  That afternoon at a roadside stop I happened to be parked next to a motor mechanic.  He looked under the coaster and found that a hose was leaking and was the cause of my problem.  Next morning he drove with me to Narrabri and we purchased a hose for $14 from .. Which he attached, and this fixed the problem.

I would like to bring to your attention my dissatisfaction with the NRMA dealer in Moree as if he had just looked under the Coaster in the first place he would have seen, as the mechanic did, that the problem was not in fact the main oil seal but just a broken hose.  If I had decided to go ahead with his suggestion I would be have been $1786 unnecessarily out of pocket.

I realise you have no control over NRMA agencies but I believe the RACV should be aware of, and follow up on, any incidents for which they could be liable.

I may add If it was'nt for Rod Heather and Norma whom I had bumbed into last 2 days ago and He fixed it in Seconds..For that I am eternally grateful there will be many discussions at Greens Lake inregard to this  story of mine...I feel everybody needs to know what I had to go through

Lucky you found Rod, I think a lot of these serviceman are not mechanics, and really should not be employed
they should class these as scams and set the police onto them

Out in the bush it's a matter of course to stop for someone parked up on the side of the road, especially if the bonnet is up.
I realise this is a bit difficult with the Coaster, but you get my drift.
I've done a bit of work out on the Strez Track just lately, and when a truck I was travelling with broke down, the tilt on the cab was a dead giveaway. That's "bonnet up" to the lay person. The cab-over Argosy Freightliner was in starter motor trouble.
I was impressed with the number of busy road train drivers who pulled over to see if they could assist. No one could, but we couldn't say they didn't try.
Then on a return trip I saw a blue truck pulled up on the roadside. I stopped, wound my window down (yes, manual windows), and popped me head out of the window and asked the driver if he was ok. He was an old timer, but very alive and well, just taking a spell from the incessant corrugations on the empty road train. We had a good chat, the tourists drove around us, and then I was on my way.
A young, energetic diesel mechanic at Lake Cargelligo (spelling) was very helpful when my car overheated, but not fried.
He did what he could before concluding it was a thermostat problem. He rang around town but no one had one, so he referred me to Goulbourn, where 1.5 hours later I was welcomed and assisted, leaving town feeling confident my thermostat had been replaced with no long-term affects on "Rosy".
Give me the bush congeniality any day, or night.
I'm glad your problem was resolved honestly Jimbo.
