wow , thats strange... never thought of that, when we got the van we had 3 years road side help from the fiat group, probably over by now..

We tow a caravan, and had no trouble with NRMA.

If the nominated vehicle towing the caravan is covered by Premium Care and the caravan or trailer is not over 2 tonnes, it will be covered for Roadside Assistance.

With Premium Care your caravan or trailer is also covered for free towing up to 50km in metropolitan areas, up to 100km in remote areas and in country areas, back to the town of the attending NRMA Country Service Centre or 50km free towing in any direction.

We have only needed to use it once- with car problems- and they towed both car and van into Dubbo, organised accommodation, took the car to the dealer, organised a hire car, rang the dealer daily overseeing the repairs, rang us to check we were OK......110% satisfied !!

I have RACV Insurance and Total Roadside Assist. My van Myrtle is a Toyota HiAce Poptop LWB.

It doesn't surprise me as there are alot of Insurance companies who won't insure Motorhomes yet will insure caravans. Roadside assist is possibly viewed the same way by the various relevant companies. I'll certainly consider your tip re 24/7. For the price it sounds pretty good. I've been lucky enough to only have problems within my capabilities; but for $55 per year, why would I bother getting my hands dirty and mashing knuckles. Great tip!!!

I did have RACQ Ultra care package costing $270 per annum but it became due last May and I didn't use it and haven't renewed it.

Whilst on my round Australia trip in a 1979 Hi Ace I had no confidence that RAC could help me at all because in country WA as in the NT I would have been unable to contact them. Now that I am back on the Eastern Seaboard I have been looking for a suitable roadside assistance provider at a reasonable cost and 24/7 looks good from their website.

During the trip I did have some problems but had to sort them out myself without RACQ assistance and now am setting off again soon but this time I will not have such huge distances to cover without phone coverage.

Vehicle has to be under 3.5T that leaves me out and probably a lot of motorhomers. Great for the smaller vehicles though.

Hi Keith, as I haven't needed their help I don't know how good 24/7 are, but I'm hoping they will be OK if I ever need their services. It would be interesting to know if anyone has used them. I meant to post this subject on the general forum so a lot of people may not see it. I was looking at the Solo forum at the time and posted it on that page by mistake.

RAC & Aussie Assist is what I have, boy am I glad about that.

This is not a vechicle breakdown but a medical breakdown, RACWA shipped our 4x4 and van back from Victoria to WA and put us on a plane to get us home, all inclusive and paid for by RACWA, great service.

G'day Janno. It's a puzzle, re. R/S assistance. I'm with RAC in WA, and have had reason to call them out when in trouble, and interstate in my M/H. However, they won't insure my M/H !!!??? My coverage with RAC applies to any private vehicle I drive, even if it isn't mine.

Hi Janno, it was a great tip but I just found out (like Chris) that I'm too heavy. (I mean the M.H. not me or Chris personally). Great pit really, I'm too tall for some companies and too heavy for others. It's a bit annoying really as my M.H. weight is just under 4.5 tonnes which makes it a 'light vehicle' (car under the Vic legislation. Yet car washes, roadside assists and others all consider me to be a 'truck' (medium regid). Thanks anyway for the tip.

I cannot get contents insurance on my camper as it is considered my 'car'
If I had a van tho I could have contents insured. NRMA

We have had RACV insurance and roadside assist package for the van and vehicle.
But now considering a motorhome - e.g. Coaster. RACV will not do roadside assist because too heavy. However, the CMCA promotes insurance by Ken Tame, which includes breakdown towing, and it seems from my research that members are happy with his product.

Wendy I'm insured with them and very happy. I broke my ankle 400klms from home over Christmas and was worried that if I drove with a cast on my leg, that my insurance may be invalid. I phoned Ken Tame's mobile number. His wife was sitting next to him in their car and she asked him for me and he replied no problem, ok to drive.

Try that with most insurance companies.

Well, As far as I concerned Roadside Assistance services plays an important role. Every one should take Roadside assistance cover for their cars.

I'm registered and live in Tasmania. Just checked out RACT; RACQ; RACV; and 24/7 Roadside Assistance. I can come up with a home address in each State if necessary. RACT and RACV are competitive. RACQ will not do motorhomes. 24/7 Roadside Assistance do not cover you in Tasmania. Read the fine print !!!

Motorhome roadside assistance seems to be a 'specialised' area. There are those that specialise in providing the service but most of the 'car' ones do not.

I just checked my Terms & Conditions for RACV - no mention of any 'exclusion' for Roadside Assistance for those who hold Roadside Assistance. RACV have reciprocal arrangements with ALL state organisations - see here

Read the bottom line about Tasmania being excluded.

RACQ advised me they do not provide roadside assistance policy for Motorhomes. What happens if you are with RACV, you are travelling within Qld, and you require assistance with your MH. ?

If you are with RACV total care make sure you read the fine print on page 18
GVM = 4.0t
Height = 8'10"
Width = 7'6"
Lenght = 22'
I was told previously by RACV that depending on the problem and where you are, and if the towing company has a big enough truck you may be ok,
I really joined total care to make sure I was covered with the van, but not so

As this thread has been bumped up from 2012 and I have needed to use mine recently, here is my story on this.
Back at the original start of the post I had Myrtle.
Now I have the Silver Fox. I have both Insurance and Roadside Assist with RACV. On my way down WA about Fitzroy Crossing I got a large crack in my windscreen. Rang RACV and they arranged a replacement which I had done at Pt Hedland. No issues, no problems and nothing for me to pay and I was on my way.
Very pleased.
