The brolgas are beautiful when they "dance" before mating season. At the end of the southern spring, or just before the wet season in the tropics. There was a mob of about 100 around a turkeys nest (dam) near the station homestead. Magnificent in full flight too.
The bustards or bush turkey gets out and parades for the "girls" about the same time. They have a really stupid look on their face, and fluff up their tail feathers into a plume, and ponce around looking georgeous, and not a female in sight. I guess he's being optimistic his luck will change, or too stupid to know it won't. The stupid look reminds me of a hormonal teenage lad having a "reaction" to a sweet little thing walking past him in the school yard.

When we were staying at Kingfisher Park at Julatten FNQ, a German bird photographer came rushing up to us and aske if we has seen the Bast*rds. We were very confused until he showed a a photo of a magnificent male bustard in full plumage that he had just taken. We still have a giggle at this one. Glenda

Second Pic. is a Tree snake on a friends' verandah, when I picked her up this morning, for another trip to Marlborough. First one is a Frill necked Lizard that was on the road on the way home. Didn't get a shot of a Tortoise that was on the road on the way in.

Some lovely shots of the wildlife on this thread.

When I first came to Oz in'84 I was so disapointed to see sparrows,pigeons and crows around town.Not that I was expecting to see flocks of budgies around town.Wasn't till I got out of town I started to see the wonderful birds and animals here.

I am amazed at the number of Sea Eagles here,each with a territory to keep.

In the UK they have an Osprey similar to the Sea Eagle.When they breed they have 24Hr protection .Barbed wire,infra red beams to keep the egg poachers away.Guards the whole shebang.

We are very lucky here to have so much wildlife to enjoy.

Seeing Brolgas dancing is one of the most spectacular scenes I have witness in the wild. They circle each other and call , while throwing sticks and grass into the air, and jumping. They are common around the wetlands of the north, and I have seem a pair at the Combo waterhole, home of the watzing matilda song. They are beautiful birds.They are also known as the native companion, because a lot of the corroboree dances are themed after them .Bill

Most tree snakes are not venomous gillyb, but Night Tigers, or Brown Tree Snakes [also called Doll's Eye] are venomous to birds and maybe small animals.

The next one can[if I've identified it correctly], kill pets. Not 100% sure about humans. Maybe kids. Still have to check it out properly.

I think it's a Black Whip, but not entirely sure. It doesn't have the distinctive Eye marking. Any help will be appreciated.

Got it in on the bed-head about an hour or so ago. About 5' long, with blue skin between the scales. Divided anal scale. Picture 015.jpg

You are gamer than me Sheba, I hope you were at a distance and lens on full zoom for that last shot, in fact, any of them. I would prefer to be a distance from any snake, I don't like them at all.

Found out today that it was a Tree Snake. Bad Karma for me. believe it or not, had to go to marlborough again today. Saw these on the way home.

There were 4 altogether, but couldn't get a Pic. of them close together. This might not be as sharp as I'd like. The closest one is even more fuzzy.

That's also new to me. The Apple Tree Creek Pub was once the most profitable in Qld. believe it or not. Going back about 40 odd years now.

I do know there is also a butterfly sanctuary at Apple tree Creek just north of Childers, thats the one I want to go to. You walk among the butterflies for acres.
