I remember Bandstand - and The Go Show - and Six O'Clock Rock - Johnny O'Keefe - met Gerry Marsden from Gerry and the Pacemakers at the Southern Cross hotel in Melbourne years ago - this was THE place back then for artists to stay - and I worked five doors down - knew a lot of the porters, and they would tell us who was going to be there - even took the Beatles out on the roof on our side so we could wave to them from our windows at work - very exciting! Gerry Marsden was lovely - after meeting us we went to a concert and he leaned over and kissed my hand - met all sorts of people at the Southern Cross Hotel - working in Melbourne was very exciting in the 60's - the music scene was absolutely buzzing - not a week went by without some sort of concert, dance or whatever - Battle of the Bands at Festival Hall - I could go on and on - thanks for the nostalgia trip guys!!

I don't really know what was happening in Brisbane as we were a bit sheltered from that scene living in the bush on the outskirts of Brisbane.

I did go to Festival Hall a couple of times and I think there was a couple of nightclubs, but we were never into that scene, even when we were old enough. We were more into the local dances and our friends band, who used to practice at home. We had a lot of fun with them. My friend and I were actually 'go go girls' for the band on one occasion! Very amatuerish, I might add!

I lived in Sydney and we were lucky enough for our local dances to be held by Col Joye, Johnny O'Keefe, Dig Richards, (who remembers him??) and lots of others who went on to make it in the big time.

We were still at school and not really supposed to be there...but my girlfriend and I told a good story about weekly homework projects that we were working on together...we were very big fibbers....and thankfully, we weren't caught out.

I remember going to see Col Joye and The Delltones (remember Pee Wee) at a place called "Cloudland" somewhere near Brisbane, but I can't remember the suburb now. Anyone know where Cloudland was? (long gone now).

Yes, its long gone Vic. I think it was Newstead, up on top of a hill. It's now full of posh houses.

It was famous in it's time. I've heard all about it, but never went there.

The last time I saw The Deltones, PeeWee Wilson was still the front man. He must be getting up there now.

Thanks Beth, it was a long time ago, I think it had a sprung dance floor from memory. That Pee Wee, his voice comes from right down in his boots somewhere, they were a great group.

Cloudland on top of the hill at Bowen Hills in Brisbane was a premier dancehall, it was originally named Luna Park

Cloudland was demolished in 1982 and is now an apartment complex with the same name.

Saw the Delltones here in Boonah earlier this year - in concert - band been going for 50 years (present lineup 25 years) Pee Wee Wilson is 72!!!!! - still looks the same, and sounds the same - will bring CD with me to Victoria - also dvd -the venue here was packed out!!! Really good show.

Wow what a lot of nostalgia. As far as I know John Farnham was born in Adelaide and he came from a family of plumbers who now trade on his name - he was a plumber by day while he worked gigs but he would have gone to Melb quickly because Adelaide was dead. There is a extended family of Adelaide Farnham plumbers who are the spitting image of John.

Whoever mentioned PPM - it would have been amazing seeing them live.

Bandstand was great for giving Australian artists a leg up. Really there is no equivalent now.

I saw Darryl Cotton, Russell Morris and Steve Keays do a gig together at the Pt Lincoln Tunarama Festival open air concert last January. The "old boys" have still got it. What a great chance to get up and boogy to good old rock n roll.!
I had the hots for Russell when I was a bopper watching Bandstand. "I Am The Real Thing" was his signature tune, and he sang it on the night. Oh, the memories.
I loved Doug Parkinson's husky voice.

John was born in England and moved to Melbourne when he was 10 - he lived not far from me. He lived here for ages - his family moved about 15-20 years afterwards, I think to the Caulfield area. He did a bit of performing in Adelaide because that is where is manager at the time, Darrell Sambell lived. Check out Wikipedia for more info - they would have more info.

Hi Jules - sorry, PPM are Peter Paul and Mary who were the best ever. Esmeralda you have just unearthed another myth. I lived in Adelaide in the 80's and there was a large plumbing company called Farnhams and believe me they all looked like various versions of John - old ,young, fat, stringy, wrinkly, portly, tall. short etc. It was an accepted fact of Adelaide folklore that John was a member of this family. I always believed it but now stand corrected. Guess someone will prove that Elvis is dead now. Cheers

Elle - John never got "portly" until he was much older - he used to be quite thin. Your plumbers could be related but John definitely lived in an area of Dandenong called Lyndale at times and Oakwood Park at others.
