Hi, letmecu, one of the best things you can do is buy yourself a copy of Camps 6 - and as to where to start - depends what you want to do - are you intending to travel - go on the road - take short trips - free camp - caravan parks - work - let us know a bit more about some of these things, someone on here will start the ball rolling I am sure.
Read peoples posts, go back and just start clicking on topics that grab you - you'll find out lots.
Meantime - enjoy

id prefer to free camp however not sure about leaving my van over weekends while i work in sydney so maybe a safe place maybe best ,i do live in work from friday evening till sunday evening with week days free

thanks for your reply, im working weekend in boublebay so i need some where safe to place my van id prefer bush setting but have no idea where? i have the wanders mate which doesnt give ant details close to sydney except say wisemans ferry which i love

Hi - just looking in the fifth edition of Camps Australia - there are some spots around the Greater Sydney area - some out west - sort of between Camden and Penrith (don't know Sydney very well), place called Appin near Campbelltown - Bundeena near the water (caravan park, but reasonably priced to be in this book), some up around Windsor - as I said the Camps Australia Wide - is as it says - the travellers bible - the latest edition just out is no. 6 - available all over the place now, including on line real good investment.
People on this site are very helpful, and willing to help - if you find places and want to know about them, post the question, someone is bound to know about it.

Wiseman's Ferry is a bit out of the way if you are working in Double Bay.

If you want to go by public transport then either the one at Windsor or the one at Bundeena would suit you better. Caravan Park that is.

I don't wish to be a wet blanket, but I wont free-camp anywhere between the blue mountains and Sydney .. Free camping is what I do and enjoy most .. but Sydney and suburbs just do not provide safe and suitable free-camp zones .. be it for male or female ! When I visit family in the western suburbs I can travel in and and 'park' on their footpath, but thats not something I'd suggest you'd try without closely looking into it.

I've lived for some 34 years in the area ..

My suggestion is like Ma's .. to look up caravan parks that might be close to a railway link or bus route.

..or if you know someone in the area to get in touch with them for local knowlege

Hi and welcome letmecu.
I understand, by what you wrote, you are looking for a place to set up camp with your van so you can just drive out to your spot and kick back for the weekend or whatever.
However, I'm going to be wet blanket #2, I would strongly recommend against this. Apart from the fact councils don't encourage this behaviour, it's not in your best interest to leave your van unattended anywhere, ever. Unless you know someone with private property in the vicinity of your chosen spot who is willing to allow you to set up camp, just leaving your van on a creek bank or wherever is probably not allowed or recommended.
There are free camps all around the country, but once again, there are some restrictions applied to most of them, such as time limits. Most of these don't have bathroom facilities either.
The only safe way of locating your van on site way from home is in a caravan park at a destination of your choice, for which you will pay a site fee, of course. Parks have power, bathroom amenities etc AND, security, which would be your biggest concern.
The days of "shacks" or "batches" or whatever you want to call them, are over. Even "free camping" has rules in most council regions.

Don't pay any more than $58 for spiral bound Camps 6 & that includes postage, so should be available for less than that in shops.

If you do decide to go to a caravan park near Sydney, Lane Cove Caravan Park is in a bush setting adjacent to a National Park.

I was going to suggest Wattagan Mountains until I checked your profile and noticed that that's right on your doorstep. Still it may be worth a thought if you're just wanting do a couple of "practice runs" I would suggest that you practice at home rigging up and de-rigging so that this becomes "second nature" to you before venturing out. Another thought, a wet weather campout, say up at The Pines would give you a chance to sort out any wet weather camping issues. (not far to come back home if you need to.)

yer thanks but im already living in the van at morisset, i know the pines infact i love it there i jst need a generator to be able to stay there one day ill do that
