I've spent a good amount of time in the area too Jules. I have very dear friends who used to live in Mossman, then Rocky Point and now in Malanda. I'm not fussed on Cairns either, but I love the tablelands. Malanda, Atherton, Yungaburra, Kuranda, all beautiful and green! Not so fussed on Mareeba, as it gets very hot there.

I'm heading up there in June, to visit my friends and see the countryside to and from.

i am at a c/van park in cairns, only just retired and soon traveling .

i worked for an earthmoving co in marrebafor the last 7 yrs.

yea there is a crok in lake placid causin a stir lol

Hi Yogi. Welcome to the Nomads. I left Cairns last October after more than 2 years in First City Caravilla.
Headin' back that way tomorrow with my job escorting a load to Moranbah.
Would that be a freshie in the lake? Probably not eh. Did the river flood this year during the wet season?
No swimming in the lake until the croc moves on.

Welcome Yogi. Hope the Croc is not as big as the one from the "Lake Placid" movie, or some-one will have a huge problem.

I have a Kindle DX electronic reader. I've had it for about a year now, and have 15 pages of books in it so far - 10 books to a page. It will hold something like 18,000 books! I bought it online from amazon.com for $189 back then, and it was here in my hands from America 4 days after I made the transaction online! Their after sales service is magnificent, and if something goes wrong with it, you simply send them an email, and THEY will telephone you and troubleshoot the problem with you.
Reading time lasts up to 2 weeks, depending on how much and how long you read, but you simply recharge the Kindle by connecting it to mains power for a few hours. It works wirelessly, and books are downloaded directly to your Kindle in as little as a minute. Switch the wireless function off after each purchase, and you will extend the reading life of the Kindle before having to recharge it. You can buy leather covers for it to help protect it while travelling from Oberon Design. If I can find the website address, I'll post it in here - shouldn't be too hard.

Ooh,

no napping on this job! I'm so busy concentrating on what I'm doing in relation to protecting idiot motorists from the big steel structure, I don't even think of a snooze.
I also have to warn the truck driver of anything he has to watch out for, including idiot motorists who want to ignore the approaching big steel structure.
It really is another way of travelling. No time for sightseeing, but we're moving slow enough to soak up the scenery as it slides by.
I sleep well in my camp bed and rise before the sun, so we're ready to roll at daybreak. No night driving on this job either, which is a good thing.
I took my time coming home on the rough roads of NSW & Qld.
Now I'm ready to do it all again.

So I'm sitting here after doing 2 loads of washing and hanging it out, (hoping it won't rain), a bit of housework and sending the article I wrote yesterday to travel magazines.
Maybe we could share what our skills are, what we like to do, and what we can do when we have to - that sort of stuff. Especially when we're not on the road.

I am into patchwork and quilting (have bought smaller sewing machine and portable sewing table for when I get on the road for long periods, and there is always hand piecing). I am also doing the family history, so lots of online searching still at the moment and when Esmeralda is fixed I will be hitting the goldfields area (Bendigo, etc) to check out a few cemeteries. I was going to do the same in Goulburn when I was there but ran out of time - my Irish side went to Goulburn and then some moved to Bendigo and some stayed in NSW between Goulburn and Young.
