The following is quite true. 1973, and it is the start of a twenty year career as a "professional" tour driver. Alice Springs airport, and I am picking up my first tour. It is a Japanese group, and having grown up in the bush, I had no idea about their minor language problem with the letters, "L" and "R". So this lovely little Japanese tour guide tells me in halting English, that the group want to go to, the "FRYING PRACE" I reckoned that they musta been hungry, so I dropped them off at the local "Steak House" Trouble was, they wanted to go to the Royal Flying Doctor Base. I never did live that down.
Yes Mervena . Ted's "Our Coach Captain"- used to love All his work , until one day , about 1990 , driving road-trains in th Territory . I pulled up for lunch , heading back to my truck , I said hello Ted as I walked past , about 10m away 3 boys asked me if that was the bloke that did that tv show , I said This land Australia , they said yeah , we learned heaps from that . He could hear what was going on , I said I would ask for them . I went back & asked him if he was Ted Egan . He said No . I went back to the boys & said , he says you must have th wrong bloke . I only hope when I become inFamous that I remember who buys my records & watches my shows . Richo
Yeah...Last time I saw him was in the 1980's. Went to his place at The Alice for a housewarming, called it 'Sink a tinny downs'. This was before he went into the 'Drover's Boy' film.
