You may catch up to us sometime Jonathan (and even probably pass us). We're at Esperance now & slowly heading clockwise also but. We will have to delay a bit before we head too far north due to the wet season in Nth Aus'

I don't plan on heading north too early from WA either .. but its most likely we'll get in touch sooner or later.

This trip is for me to simply 'slow down' a little .. No schedule or deadlines will make it easier .. and lots of fishin' to do ! .. catch you later !

if and when i do wa, i want to go to the rock first, darwin, then down to perth eventually and accross the Nullabor, do it that way
what sort of weather should i expect, proably wont be till middle of next year,
may be going to Europe for a couple of months first..

In the middle of the year is usually the "dry" season up north. (This year being the exception.)
The day time temp is in the mid to high 20's and the nights are cool, or can be frost around the centre. It's really the ideal time to travel north.
From October the humidity starts to build towards the wet season, when all hell can break loose and you can be stuck by flood waters across floodways and rivers for weeks.
When you're on the road, get updates on road and weather conditions from roadhouses, other road users, and the internet, if you have signal. You can never have too much information on these things when travelling in these regions.

G'Day Jonathon,

You said you had been in WA before, so will no doubt know many places etc over here. I probably wouldn't start to head north in WA until about May, but definitely the south/west before then. The Busselton Jetty Underwater Observatory is supposed to be re-opening around the end of 2010, which will be well worth visiting, it has an underwater viewing tank at the end of the jetty, see;

The Council park right on the beachfront is good value and easy walking distance to the jetty, beaches and town, take security precautions though as it is not fenced and they have the occasional theft of goods left outside at night.

If you like fishing, Parry Beach (council run) camping area (ok for caravans and motorhomes etc) is cheap at about $8 per night, no power or drinking water though, has solar showers & toilets in the camping area block and another block near the entry to the grounds with cold showers and toilets. Caretaker house on site. Great fishing from rocks or boat and a very relaxing venue. Make sure you visit William Bay for a swim or fish etc, it is spectacular. Both are not far west of Denmark on the South coast road. You can't camp at William Beach. Peaceful Bay is not far from Denmark either. See;

Anywhere on the coast of WA will be packed during holidays so need to book, Parry Beach is "first in first served".

Be aware it will be very hot going across the Nullabor around December, so plenty of water needed.

.. Hi folks .. and thanks for all your comments which are now stored away in the grey matter .. hmmm .. s'pos that's not such a good place these days !!

.. oh well .. Really looking forward to getting going again though .. just a few weeks sitting still in cities is enough for me.

My first choice is free-camping .. so although there will be some occasion to be spent in assorted parks, I will usually try to spend time in the bush when I can ..

I'm currently camping on the footpath at one of my lads near Liverpool as I have a Dental appointment (1 of 3) on the 21st.
Until that is over, I won't know when my next appt. will be .. but will try to arrange it outside of 1st - 11th Nov .. (fairly major Dental work)
.. but I missed last years at Elmore so don't wish to miss this one ..

Hi Jon - There's two of us, and our plan is the same - we hope to leave Tassie in late February, after the worst of the summer heat is over, and all the kids are back at school, and take our time "doing the block" - up the WA coast, across the top, and down through Queensland, then back to Tassie about September/October next year. We'll be watching with interest for any reports from you. Safe travelling!

Yes .. I think the important thing is to stay quite flexible and retain common sense. Earlier this year I travelled with friends to the west and back, and thats when I realised I wanted to spend greater time across the Nullabor .. hence my decision to go back again and also see it in summer and without any time restriction other than to also head up the west coast as the Norths wet season comes to an end ..

I'm sure you'll enjoy the experience !

Hi Mick ..

As members of the HF (High Frequencies) Radio Club, we hold Club get-togethers/rallies at various places around Oz ..
The Elmore meeting is at Aysons Reserve which is halfway between Echuca and Bendigo in Victoria .. not all members attend as we are all around Oz and travelling in different areas .. but its all good fun ..

HF Radio owners usually belong to a HF radio network. The most widely known one being what was known as the 4WD network (VKS 737).

The HF Radio Club (VKE 237) is another excellent HF network that is growing in member numbers all the time. In its operation it is more "social" than the VKS 737 network. Plus as Jon said they have a number of official get togethers all over Australia so people can put faces to the voices they hear over the airways whilst relaxing around a BBQ, campfire, and off course Happy Hour.

Not only is there this social aspect to these gatherings but experienced members, like Jon, give talks on HF Radio use, services the Club offer, plus give one to one tuition on how to operate your own HF Radio.

We have been to two previous Victorian HF Radio Club Rallies and enjoyed both whilst learning more about using our HF Radio.

Thanks again for your effort in replying and explaining about the HF Radio club, I had no idea about this system as we use UHF radio's all the time when travelling.
Specially when we are in a group,which does happen quite allot.

Question.
Whats the difference between HF and UHF and which is the strongest system

HF is the stronger of the 2, can comunicate over 2-3000 km, used by flying doc and emercency services in outback aust. Evidence of a HF radio in a vehicle can often be seen by the thumping great auto tune ariels mounted on them
