Newman in the mighty Pilbara (as Lawsy once said), is a pretty good place. Mountains are spectacular. Still prefer the rugged ranges to the coast but I did glimpse for the first time, the Indian Ocean at Barn Hill on 80 mile beach. Good to see water again. Port Hedland had no room at the Inn (for anyone) so headed south. If only I knew where I was going. Have no choice here has to be Meekatharra but might head to Geraldton back on the coast then up to Carnarvon where there may be a work opportunity. People everywhere (mainly grey nomads) pretty nice people (as we are). Halls Creek and Fitzroy Crossing had a great time with fellow nomads. Katherine in NT was where it really hit. (I wanted to restock) All the Abos hanging around Woolies liquor outlet which doesnt open till 2pm. But I think they were outnumbered by grey nomads wanting to restock. I was allowed one two litre cask but had to show ID, which was scanned. Rules are different in each town.
The sunsets and sunrises are spectacular as are the stars. NT kids have 4 weeks holiday Qld and WA have two. All back on Monday so it will be just grey nomads and peace (not a complaint).this is the first signal Ive had for a few days..so till next timecheers
Wow Sue, now you're in my fave country. By the way Barn Hill is north of 80 Mile Beach, but great coast line and the Hill is a lot of fun in the season too. Anna Plains Station's northern boundary begins at the northern extreme of the Beach. Cape Carauderon or the 80 Mile Beach van park are nice places to stay - if you can find a spot. Hedland parks are full of miners looking for somewhere to live because no one can aquire any more land for residential development. The locals and BHP have a bit to do with that I think. Meeka is ok for a short stop over, but if you head to Paraburdoo towards the coast you could find work at Carnarvon. You'll also pass through some great country. The vege gardens and planations are always looking for workers. The Coral Coast Pk in Carnarvon is in town while the others are out of town a little bit. The people were really nice there, and they had a bbq/quizz night during the week. It's all good fun and walking distance into the main street shopping. The Blow Holes are spectacular on the coast just north of town. Along that stretch of coast there are some contrasts only a few hundred metres apart which had me fascinated. WA has a very strict Liquor Accord which varies only slightly from town to town. We get punished for the sins of our brothers and sisters - so to speak. The distribution of alcohol has been decided by law between the Aboriginal elders, the Police, the Health Department, the liquor outlets and anyone else involved in scraping up the scraps of drunk bodies.
