yes pam we entered queenstown from the new norfolk side which put the dragon on the outer edge, the motorhome we hired weighed in at 4.8 tonne from memory and took up all the road that was left, the denuded mountainside made the ride very scary for her as she was closest to the crumbling edges, if you recall the road has crumbled right back to the white posts probably more now, and the drop would have to be, what 1/2 a mile??? wouldnt it,
as we crested one of the taller ones that directly over look queenstown there is a parking bay just on the other side, overlooking queenstown itself, we pulled in there for photos and a breather, we heard a screeching of tyres and a big ball of dust and when it cleared we seen two germans who had not given the mountain the respect it deserved almost went over the edge. very white faced and sheepish!!
I think it was a bit further on from queenstown where we stopped and had lunch at a fantastic little spot, bbq provided in the shadey grassed area, to our left I remember about 4 big pipes heading over a hill just behind us.
the hardest one we tackled was straight after we picked the motorhome up at launceston, we headed straight across to derby and down the east coast, straight up and straight down then to keep you interested they put a hairpin at the bottom of each one of them.
lovely road going in to port arthur, same thing with all the hairpins, well worth it though, anyway I'd better shut up or they will kick me out. raved on too much, thats what happens when you get me going about my favourite stomping grounds, shame on you!!!

We were there during the "do we clone a Thylacine or not debate" Personally if we have the power to bring an animal back form extinction I'd say give it a go.... I digress, the news was full of a story where 3 Uni students were looking at 7 years gaol for the heinous offence of getting a thylacine bodied dog from the Launceston pound and dying a thylacine pattern on its coat and realeasing it at a popular picnic area where it went around begging for scraps....

my most magic place is the long straight stretches of hwy this fabulous country of ours has, I arrived here in 52 as a 10 pound pom at the age of 14, started work as a jockey on a furniture van, and havent stopped rolling yet A very Happy christmas and a rolling good year to you all Mike and Judy How about that avater, taken at sunset at the Breakaways, near Coober Pedy
mate I've been studying that avatar and wondering, in some respects it reminded me of the nullabour and in others it was like the other side of broken hill. but now that you come to mention the breakaways, well OF COURSE it is
the walkway at winterbrook from memory was or should say is not all that far from the actual falls themselves, total walk (according to my log is about 2 hours) , but when the body quits it might as well be a million miles away,
been there (body quitting) I can tell you and it is very frustrating, too many years on heavy machinery does that to you, but without the big money that mining equipment entails I wouldnt have what I have and the lifestyle that I enjoy I guess, so a bit of a catch 22. anyway just had a quick look around my cd collection (I've reorginised it and catergarised it and made things a little easier to find) and I dug this one out for you, it's standing at the base of winterbrook in the summer of '98

Howzit Basil (that's G'day in our local slang) I saw your post regarding your claim to fame (Auty Nell) and then spent the rest of the morning reading all the posts after that......sounds like Australia is an incredible country to view. I'm sure as a visitor to the country one should rather look at these types of forums so that you can get the better picture.....rather than following the regular "tourist traps" when you don't know any better!
I'm from Cape Town, South Africa...and have never had the opportunity to travel to Oz but everyone's posts have inspired me....also it might give me an opportunity to meet all the family branches over there.
anyway the main reason I joined the site is because of Aunt Nell....my GG Grandfather and her were cousins.....I just can't figure out where you fit in the family? Were you related to the Lamport side or the Stevenson side?
I've been to many of the places listed on this page, and everyone is right on the ball. One of my favourite places is the west coast of SA from Pt. Lincoln to Ceduna. The seal colony at Pt. Labatt near Streaky Bay, Sheringa Beach, Murphy's Haystacks (granite outcrop), Southern Right Whales in the Bight, the surf at Cactus Beach, Whalers Way, Lincoln and Coffin Bay National Parks, oysters as far as the eye can see, fish, blue crabs, and more isolated beaches than you can poke a stick at. There's always Diamond Gorge at Mornington Station in the Kimberleys, or the colourful beaches north of Broome. It's much more private than mounting a camel on Cable Beach in full view of 30 nude sunbathers of varying ages between 50 and 80. Eeeew! What a wonderful land we live in.

Talking of old radio shows and the flicks (jaffers Giggle giggle), does an one remember that radio program called green bottle or something like it ? kids in school getting into strife, (Good morning boys, Gooooooood morning sir, Good morning boys.) I thing that was the opening line, any way I for one would love to hear all that again, also Dad n Dave, Dam it there must be some way to get it back again.
2gb sydney were playing all those old radio programs on friday nights at least until xmas just gone. presume they are still going as they were pretty popular. they were on the david wiltshire ? time slot who has just returned from hols so hopefully they will resume bring back childhood memories don't they;
oh jeeezzz! now you've raked over the memories, you'll be sorry, green bottle was his name but dont ask me the name of the program. the days when the most powerfull tool in the universe was employed for the good of mankind, dont know what it is, well for you in the back, it is of course our imagination
didnt need playstations or puteys or gameboys, nor did we need gps we always new where we were, never got lost we were occasionally misplaced but we would never ask directions, a game with our mates was "OUTSIDE" yes little johnny we actually went out side to play, tv ,if we had it or when we watched it, was black and white, vegemite belonged to australia and gay meant one was a very happy little chap
there were no lesbians, ladies held hands with each other because they were freinds, we had chores to perform before play, bedtime was 8'oclock straight after bath, I was last in line for the bathwater, mum always made preserves and they werent available through the shops
we never locked the house or the car, why would you, xmas was standing room only and more food than a hundred soldiers could eat, everybody in the town new everyone else, anybody sick in the town and it was all hands to the pump until he/she was well again
the cfs and cwa had more volunteers than they could handle, and the main street at xmas was a sight to behold with father xmas giving out pressies, riding on the back of the ford traytop covered in haybales for seats
there was no graffiti, vandalism was something they did overseas, there was always 100% attendance at school unless one was gravely ill, and on arbour day we all planted a great swag of trees, we lined up in an orderly row and were marched in to the sound of a big bass drum, honoring and saluting the australian flag on the way, we sang god save the queen and recited our times tables as well as the alphabet before commencing class, if you didnt know your tables or the alphabet then the "yardstick" would be emplyed, one very quickly learnt the tables, there were no deficit disorders, some kids needed a bit more time with them than others and if you had adhd then out came the miracle cure "Mr YARDSTICK" and you immediately became well again, I still feel his presence even now
town trees were always trimmed and the lawns were a picture at all times,
where was this paradise I hear you ask, well just over the ranges about 40 years ago!!! we have not advanced we have retreated in to madness!!!

I may be able to help with Dad & Dave, let me pull a few strings I may be able to get the recordings on CD for ya.... Yes What? starred green bottle... The famous last episode I can still remember... 'G'Day boys and girls it's your old mate Greenbottle here. Today we're going to have a spelling lesson and today's word is summons. S-U-M-M-O-N-S. Now we'll put it in a sentence, " I was gunna take you to the movies, but summons stole me ute." Now here's a quick word of advice for all you animal lovers out there - what you're doing is illegal.'

to feed and shelter an injured or orphaned native animal or bird is not illegal in fact it is unethical to not provide food and or shelter for said animal if in obvious distress,
these little fellers are not constrained or restrained in any way shape or form, I do not feed them on a regular basis, I have water for my dogs at all times and they do take advantage of that but they are free to come and go as they please, they recieve no food apart from the bits off my plate certainly not enough to survive on, I give them areas of safety
I make up little "homelands" for them, woodpiles, small messy areas and I planted about 150 trees and shrubs about 20 years ago and still am planting in my yard and around my house blocks, I have provided a habitat, a retreat for them, a small sanctuary if you will but I do not constrain them to these environs they are free to come and go as they please, the younger ones soon seek an area of their own some distance away
in this day and age of me, me, me I just provide a little something for THEM!!! what has been destroyed in huge quantities I have replaced in a very small area, I reap the rewards, give me more land and I will continue planting, we are nothing without the animals and surrounds
not illegal, its what sets us apart from the animals!!!

Dave - the insinuation was not the care and feeding of orphaned animals.... Use the term animal lover in a cruder, more errol Flynish manner.....

G'day, Our wildlife give us all so much pleasure and enjoyment why wouldn't you want to help them out when you can. Good on ya Dave.
On last nights news They reported that there are apparantly hundreds if not thousands of birds dying of heat stress in WA's north, the pictures on the TV were heartbreaking.

as the lower lakes dry up or have already done so we are losing hundreds if not thousands of turtles as well as the sea birds and fish and all the other creatures that used to live in those areas, we are losing species at a rapid rate of knots through land degredation and haphazard clearing and farming practices
it absolutely kills me to see this happen all over australia, the national parks were once pristine little oasis but are now just a haven for all things feral including bloody rangers, nobody seems to care, it is because everything is simply money driven, the almighty dollar comes before anything else and that is beginning to include life itself
I used to enjoy strolling around a lovely little forest on a mild spring day with a temperature of 25 degrees, now the trees are gone and the sun is so nasty it burns on contact
I worked in the south east of australia where the temperature never rose above 25 and it rained for 5 days and then dripped off the trees for the other 2, now it hardly ever rains and avrages 25 - 30
I am just creating a little haven for our local wildlife and at the same time giving myself some pleasure with their company, if thats being a greeny then I sure am one!!!

I'm with you pal. the almighty dollar has ruined a lot of things in this life, now I reckon I will just have to travel and enjoy what is left before it all disappears.

Thunked and chunked over this for quite some time, we are all aware of the degradation that is happening all around us and after completing the trip down the middle again , and visiting a lot of places I have been to before, its my part of Sapphire that attracts me over all other places
Maybe it the birds and animals, from watching the Wrens in the bushes at the back of the shack, to the Pardalots nesting in the side of the mine shaft,Or the parrots, from the ****atoos that awake me at dawn, or the screech of the galahs, the squabble of the bronzewings and the lorikeets screeching for the honey bread on the plate, or the dancing of the Brolgas, the way the Maggie holds it head as it swallows the mince we feed it on the floor of the shack, Maybe its the camels and horses that have free range over the whole of Sapphire, to the herds of cattle that you have to chase away from your water, during the dry spells of winter, It could be the peace of the early sunrise, as all the birds start to wakeand the glow of the rising sun creeping down the trees, the breeze building up and moving the leaves gently,The ability to do as I wish when I wish, whether it is digging in the bottom of the shaft, and the surprises of rough sapphire and zircon at the end of it in the washed gravels, or the maintenance and the creativity required to fix or fabricate a new part that I have just thought might improve the performance of the machinery, and now I have a bus that needs converting to another home The comfort of my innerspring bed, or my own choice of music and television, played as a background, no aimless chattering of crowds, sirens, multitude of growling cars, no graffiti, stink of exhausts, hardly any bitumen, not a shopping centre in sight, my own choice of opening a can of beans, or cooking a proper meal, watching Jude in the kitchen humming to the tune thats playing,Or the people, mostly senior citizens, gentle ,kind, and helpful, happy hour, quiet discussion, Ahhhhhhhhhh absolutely magical
you are indeed a lucky man!!! obviously a man after my own heart!! to apreciate nature that much takes a good man

Yes Karin Australia is an incredible country, much like South Africa without the lions and heards of wildebeast sweeping magestically away (Basil gestures with his right arm) Cue the "Blue Hills" theme.......

The place that springs to my mind here has to be Dove Lake in Tassie....we did the walk around the lake & the "boathouse" area was just so serene...beautiful memory.... -- Edited by Patricia on Tuesday 5th of May 2009 09:24:56 AM

Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "...holy shivers...what a ride!"
I've done the Dove lake walk.... It was November and snowing so lovely and bloody cold. Wonder what the boat house is for, never a boat in it must just be for Photographic reasons
