Ok, after some considerable research I am confident that I have it, drum roll please....
That pic is the view from Eden ( a popular place for Victorians to take a break) looking south across Twofold bay towards the old Whaling Station.

Basil, the trees and landscape look like home to me but the mountain range is too young, it still has the volcanic core of the mountain not yet worn away by time, the flinders, I think, are much older, which suggests to me that it may be in the blue mountains or athurton tablelands, nothing readily jumps to mind

I am ashamed to admit this but here goes.
Spent 21 years in thr Airforce flying all over this great country of ours but in all honesty all I ever saw was the inside of an aeroplane or the inside of a bar.
Back in them days was more interested in having a drink than getting out and exploring. However, 2 places do stick out, Coburg Island in the NT spent a week there, we were supposed to be over there to transport a rogue croc back to the croc farm in Darwin but they never caught it so we spent the time fishing and exploring. The Victorian Settlement was a prime example of the old colonials not knowing what they were letting themselves in for. A great place to visit.
The other was in the Kimberley's, not sure of the name of the place but I think it was King something or other. We were pre postioning 44 gallons of fuel for the Army helicopters all over the place. Spent a week at the homestead, people were fantastic and once we had finished flying for the day they showed us around the area, bloody magic. they took us to a place to have a look at some rock art, I swear one of the paintings was a dinasour.
The pity is I didn't even own a camera back then, so only have memories.

A hint would be handy Dave north west in Aus or North west of Port Pirie. A nother couple of magic places I have been are Victoria River NT I just love the landscape up there and also a place that I havn't visited since the 70's for fear of its demise to development Seal Rocks on NSW coast back then it was beach, camping ground where the power to the toilet block were run by a generator we nicknamed George and fishermen who loved to give dare i say it topless girls a feed of fish from there catch for us to cook for dinner. Surfing with grey nurses was never a problem back then I wish they had never made Jaws

errr!!! Tassie Pam, finances wont let me see sherwood forest as yet although I've always had a dream of seeing buckingham palace, the tower and sherwood forest and for some strange reason ireland, dont know why, got some freinds who have just come back from doing the european thing, they reckon it was awesome, 12 months in a motorhome cruising, the country, they say, is made for motorhomes all so close together, mongrels did canada the year before and the trans canadian railway as well as the rocky mountaneer one, another unfulfilled dream

Ahhhhhhhhhhh Seal Rocks is still a very nice spot, dirt access road keeps many out.

I'd actually love to see Stone Henge, I may get there in 2029 when I will be in that part of the world for the Bi Centenary of the Rainhill Trials. I'll only be 80.....

Yes dave we always got fish I think they liked giving food to topless 18year olds and i was going to say Tassie but the whole north west thing got me. I have been down a few roads that look like that it NW and NE tassie  Basil is it still a dirt road that would be good if it kept the developers at bay. We got offered a beach shack there for $12,000 but when your 18 and just having fun the last thing you think about is needing a house that could have been a mistake with the price of coastal property, a beach shack at seal rocks would be nice to have now.

Gee Dave,
You've had me looking at my Tassie pics now trying to pinpoint where your photo was taken. Can't quite find it. We went on a couple of 'I wonder whats down that road' drives while staying at Boat Harbour/Stanley area and ther were lots of beautiful tree lined places there.

now now pam, please dont try to get me to pinpoint it for you, I log my pictures as simply, north south east or west of such and such, but it was "up there somewhere" I will get back to you when we sell up and travel it again in our motorhome

You been up the "hill" near Queenstown too Dave. Makes Macquarie Pass near Wollongong look tame.

We spent 3 weeks in Tassie in 05 and it wasn't long enough. Too many beautiful waterfalls and walks still to do.

We cheated back then and stayed in Self contained places. Next time will take our camper.

We day sailed over. Fantastic sitting outside with the sea spray on your face.
