What are the rules (Law) for carrying petrol/diesel on rear of van.

I have asked around and everyone has a different concept. It seems to be a common practice but I wonder about legality, and insurance ramifications. Wouldn't want a face-full of fuel in the event that I rear-ended a van with containers of fuel on the rear. B

Noisy washing machine
