Yes, they both work in Canberra and commute everyday and hadn't heard. Thankfully, for them, not so for others sadly, it was going east away from them. I had visions of having to go and rescue the animals.

Carwoola fire: Crews still working to contain blaze that destroyed homes near Queanbeyan.

Firefighters hope a change in weather conditions will help them stay on top of a major bushfire that has destroyed at least 15 homes to the east of Queanbeyan in New South Wales.

An aerial shot of a property destroyed by the Carwoola fire.

The 3,400-hectare fire is still burning about 10 kilometres east of Queanbeyan in the area of Captains Flat Road between Carwoola and Hoskinstown.

Overnight, about 100 firefighters worked to contain the blaze to the west of the old railway line in the Hoskinstown area.

There are fears that if the fire crosses the railway line, it will burn into rugged country and become more difficult to extinguish.

CFS on high alert with.....catastrophic fire conditions.... forecast for parts of SA

Friday January 5, 2018 - 13:09 EDT

Audience submitted image
South Australia is on bushfire watch amid very hot and dry conditions.- Audience submitted

The Country Fire Service is bracing for catastrophic fire conditions in parts of South Australia on Saturday, with temperatures expected to again rise into the 40s.

Strong north to north-westerly winds are forecast, and total fire bans are expected for 13 of the state's 15 districts.

"Some of our CFS groups and brigades actually go to active standby tomorrow, so there will be volunteers sitting at their stations ready to jump on the trucks at a moment's notice," CFS state duty commander Nik Stanley said.

"We have our aircraft fleet prepositioned around the state based on risk.

"We'll have a heightened level of presence in our regional command centres and our state command centre."

The fire risk in the Mount Lofty Ranges and the lower south-east regions is forecast to be catastrophic, with extreme or severe danger ratings in 11 other areas.
