You walk into Costco thinking your membership card means youve unlocked some elite shopping experience.
Like yes hello, wheres my VIP lounge and complimentary grazing platter?
Instead they scan your card and immediately release you into the wild with 600 other people moving with the urgency of a Boxing Day sale over a $7 chicken.
First challenge: the trolley. Calling it a trolley is disrespectful to trolleys everywhere.
This thing is a mining vehicle. You dont steer it, you submit to it. Turning a corner requires commitment, upper body strength, and a written apology to anyone within a five-metre radius. One bloke tried reversing and nearly took out a seasonal display and three marriages.
Then we hit the sample stations, civilisation collapses instantly. Perfectly normal adults hovering like they havent eaten since 2003 waiting for a thimble sized piece of sausage. The sample lady puts one tray down and suddenly its Lord of the Flies but with shopping bags.
Now the main event the $7 chicken. You can smell it before you see it. People circling the warmer like its a sacred shrine. Someone grabs a trolley full, Im always asking who needs 26 chickens on a Monday?
And Costco math is different. You go in for batteries and leave with a trampoline, 48 muffins, industrial cling wrap and enough toilet paper to survive a minor apocalypse. Somehow it all feels justified because bulk savings whispers sweet lies into your ear.
Checkout lines are less a queue and more a community gathering. You make eye contact with strangers that says, Were in this together.
Then comes the exit inspection. The receipt checker studies your trolley like you mightve hidden a rogue cucumber under the mountain of toilet paper. Mate, Im barely holding this operation together, if I was stealing anything itd be dignity.
Costco isnt shopping. Its an Olympic event with snacks. You go in confident and leave slightly sweaty, mildly overstimulated, and somehow the proud owner of 72 croissants you absolutely did not plan for.
Mate I already need another chicken.
