The numbers don’t add up

Registered Members: 30,616 Topics: 70,165 Total Posts: 663,963 There are currently 2 member(s) and 272 guest(s) online: Ineedabiggerboat, Dick0 26658 user(s) visited this forum in the past 24 hours. According to the number of visitors in the past 24 hours, thats over 1110 per hour. On the forum content, there have been no posts regarding caravanning except one looking for recommendations for sites near Alice Springs. The rest mainly humour. Some very funny, especially the book one. One has to question the information value of the forum.

Each guest spends about 15 minutes on the site.

RE: The numbers don’t add up

Another forum I am occasionally on has had to change to log-in only to read their forum pages, as they were getting increasing number of bots just "looking" at all the pages which brought down the server a number of times.

Whatever is happening, unfortunately where it is all heading.

At the beginning of the hour, there are 272 visitors. These people stay for 15 minutes, then leave. A new group of 272 people arrives, stays for 15 minutes and leaves. And so on. At the end of the hour, 1110 visitors have come and gone. However, an observer will always see that there are 272 visitors at the site.

average stay for each visitor = (average number of visitors at any time) / (total number of visitors during 24 hours) x 24 hours

= 372 / 23688 x 24 hours = 22.6 minutes

I do not leave myself signed in.
I probably visit for a browse at least twice a day, mostly without logging on. I cannot see a need to login if I do not want to post.

RE:

My point is not the average time visitors spend on site, rather the extraordinary number of them coupled with the fact that there are very few posts. I have noted that at times, it has been 36 hours between posts. Not good. For a forum to be successful, it needs contributions from members. Preferably, those posts should mainly relate to the forums objectives coupled with a few diversions. Some members go out of their way to ridicule others. Thats a huge turn off. I try not to but Im not perfect. Is it possible that 26000 people read my Happy Easter post and couldnt both responding? Bit sad really.

"One has to question the information value of the forum."

8.6 million viewers per year suggests that there is plenty of value here. That's a metric than any Youtuber would regard as wildly successful. I don't think this forum will die any time soon.

Perhaps this forum would benefit from an overhaul of its sh1tty Sparklit software, especially its dysfunctional search engine. I miss the RSS feeds. These features broke around Nov 20, 2024, presumably after a software update.

I wonder if bots or automated searches show up in the searches as visitors to the site.

Other forums identify these bots, eg GoogleBot, as registered users.

I can't remember that one, I joined about a year before that and things were usually pretty friendly and civilised. There were a few standout characters, however.

What got everyone up dancing on that night. Please remind me Young Dougie.

If you don't like it the way it is, there is no compulsory Act to ensure you follow. The Forum can be used to suit.

Cindy has always been a fair moderator, so I suggest you direct your thoughts/ideas/complaints directly to her through a PM.

I usually have a look at the forum, every couple of days

Have you actually read the content in this thread? If so, are you responding to any particular post, or are you just venting generally?

Here is another forum that is "powered" by the same Sparklit Activeboard rubbish:

https://na.activeboard.com/

Searching for "cocaine" produces no results. However, searching for the same term enclosed in quotes yields numerous results. In other words, the same problems affect all Activeboard sites.

The Activeboard web site claims that "More than 100,000 amazing forums use ActiveBoard":

https://www.activeboard.com/

... and none of them has a functional search engine as of Nov 20, 2024.

Dorian out of curiosity I clicked on your link. Takes me to Narcotics Anonymous forum Had a look and saw a post from a self confessed junkie seeking funds to pay for his mothers funeral. Sus? Clicked on his GFM link and there is a request for donations. Currently at $4400 with a target of $5500. Hmmm. No info on funeral, cause of death BUT a stock image of a smiling middle aged woman. Quite entertaining to watch a scammer at work. Sympathies to the people who got sucked in.

GFM has a a security team that investigates each application and holds money in trust and ensures that donated money is paid to the appropriate recipient, in this case the funeral directors. If fraud is detected the money is returned to the donors. Scammers dont disclose they are recovering addicts. GFM would have the invoice and the funds raised paid directly, the applicant wouldnt have access.

Could you be so kind to share the link, please... I want to donate the difference to $5500...

The search feature is now completely broken. Not even the workaround with the quotes can get any results. It appears to be the same with all the other Activeboard forums.

Presumably, visitors arrive at this site via a Google search result, or some other search engine, and then try to use the local search feature. What is a newcomer to think if they search for "caravan" in a caravanning forum and find nothing? Maybe that's why they only stay for 15 minutes.

I wonder how much commercial damage Sparklit's cr@ppy software has done to their 100,000 clients (yeah, right). Maybe they should get together and mount a class action.

You are right.
The I.T. industry seems to have dropped the ball.

I logged into the Golf Australia website this morning and it isn't working properly on a few pages again today.
When they implemented their new useless website, I contacted them and asked them if they used the same website developer as the BOM?

Just checked it now and it is still not working.
It confounds me why some organisations have excellent web sites then replace them with a new one that is sub-standard and completely useless?

What can they possibly read?  They must be reading all posts that have ever been written.  Could also be surveillance.  Checking for hurty words Albo doesn't like.
